Yes. I've been following Nussbaum's blog for three years, she has a lot of very sharp things to say on gender, literature and pop-culture. Jul 12, 2012

Hi there. You seem to be knowledgeable on Iain M. Banks' novels, so I was just wondering: what is your opinion of his book Against a Dark Background?

I liked it, didn't think it was Banks' best work, but it's more than passible, and has a lot of good work with both characters and setting. And it's very rich in the dark, grotesque humor that for awhile he was doing better than anyone else in SF.

About that Blindsight review thread of yours you made a while back...

Looking back on the whole affair from some distance, I have to admit I did have a somewhat emotional reaction to having something I didn't like attacked and was sort of coming from that in that thread. I can't say I'd be completely on board with your interpretation but I can see where you're coming from.

I just wanted to get that off my chest.

No worries, I don't bear any grudges. As I recall it, I think you made your case reasonably well and it was an interesting debate that brought up a lot of interesting issues.

A PM I sent FBH, seemed relevant to you too.

Will post in a seperate message as it seems too big for this.

Cool, didn't know that. Been an interesting read, though her earlier stuff (the last parts I am reading) definitely are not quite as polished as the earlier ones.

Question: The Imperator, is he a rational Doctor Who expert who can explain Time Lord history and politics, or should I just back out of the conversation n now?
      1. Raskolnikov
        Raskolnikov
I haven't found him that rational on Doctor Who related matters. Pleasant enough, and willing to give ground sometimes so better than Tik, etc, but seems to have strong blinders in being prepared to rationalize things as more coherent than they are.

Thank you. Not sure if I should continue now, better than I hoped, but getting dragged into a Timelord EU debate strikes me as a bad idea.

What are some Shrike FTL feats? This is for something unrelated to the continuing Shrike debates on this forum.
      1. Raskolnikov
        Raskolnikov
Unsure on exact stats, but remember people quoting the books on the ability of the Shrike to freecast aka teleport through the void anywhere, and move through time as easily as people move through space. It makes conventional issues of travel time somewhat less irrelevant.

I just happened upon your comment in regards to Stargate power-levels:

"They'd only get to even the level of nuisance over a really long term, potentially. Is there any evidence that they've done anything substantial in modifying their own galaxy across tens of thousands of years? It doesn't seem they do anything substantial except messing with stars occasionally as a tactical measure, in a way that's not even noticeable on the galactic level."

I didn't post this in the thread, because of the 'affairs of other boards' rule, but:
      http://www.factpile.com/7087-xeelee-vs-stargate/

Possibly the biggest, and most retarded example of Stargate wanking I've ever come across. Ever. My brain literally started to melt reading through the discussion. The first few pages should tell you everything you need to know.

One for blood, two for stone.
You never know, when you'll be bone.
Three for fire, four for death.
You never know, you'll lose your breath.
Five for sin, six to kill.
You never know, what's under the hill.

Very random, but remember my criticism of Daphne in No Ordinary Family? Just watched Phil of the Future, and her actress was so much better than anything she showed on the show. Man she was misused there. I feel bad for badmouthing her now.

Yes, this is related to nothing.
    13. WyldCard4
Tell me when you're finished with Red Hen. I'm interested in what you have to say about it.
    14. Obi Juan Kenobi
      You ignoring The Sentry??
    15. Raskolnikov
Not really. For comparison, I got a text message from my sister that there were news report this, then checked around. The Guardian didn't have it for awhile, but there was enough chatter on CNN and others on the death to feel sure.
    16. WyldCard4
Your post in the Osama thread indicated you'd want to know this...

I first saw that he was dead in a chat thread on another forum. I quickly went to AOL, which I considered confirmation when it was on the first page. I called my mother to tell her as soon as I was sure. The conversation was very brief, but she called me again a short while later to tell me to watch the President's speech.

I watched it on CNN. I felt it covered all the bases.

      Any questions?
    17. Raskolnikov
Yes, caught up in other things, will respond later.
    18. Cmdr RayCav
did you get my PMs? I saw you were on the other night :p
    19. Raskolnikov
I'm back. I had some other projects going on and so imposed a two month absence from this forum to deal, nothing really out of the ordinary.
    20. WyldCard4
Probably stupid, but going almost a week without logging on worries me.

Just give me a visitor message when you return. I'm sure it's nothing.
    21. WyldCard4
Note, check the thread when you come back. There should be two posts responding to you, now that I know that Maltodextrin is still in this. There might be three, depending on when/if Alex's player is still in this.
    22. Raskolnikov
Nothing too much has been happening. I've been scaling down the number of postings somewhat, so I'm more likely to comment on things that particularly bug me. Combine that with a few long running issues that have been bugging me and some of the specific thread topics that have been most interesting running to the negative (fiction you hated the most, fiction that doesn't engage you) has probably tilted my stance somewhat. I'd expect it to average out over the longer term.
    23. WyldCard4
Is it just me or do you seem annoyed lately? I noticed some of your recent posts seemed a bit venomous.

Is everything alright? I might be completely wrong here.
    24. Raskolnikov
Ah, thanks. I honestly hadn't noticed, or that I was close before.
    25. WyldCard4
Congratulations on achieving over 10,000 posts.
