I'm imagining The Shotgun picking up upgrades in whatever crazy universes he lands in; by the end it'll be a self-reloading Intelligent Device with alternate (regenerating!) ammo marked "00 Buck", "Slug", "Anti-Tank", "Anti-Air", "Nuclear", "Antimatter"...etc.

"Goober", "Puff", "Raptor", "Stinger", "Democracy"...

Goober is nonlethal, restraining gel.
Puff is smoke/incendiary.
Raptor is smart rounds.
Stinger delivers a payload.
Democracy outvotes you 120 to whatever.

Something else to consider: he/you is damn lucky to be using buckshot, and even that is still a problem. Why? Bullets don't stop moving just because they missed and left the battlefield. People have died from celebratory shots fired into the sky by other people. The shrapnel from the grenade causes similar problems. Now consider that aerial view of the shrine you showed us.

There's also the fact that you were very luck he didn't decide to teleport so that Mars was between the two of you

4rth rule of firearms safety.

[KNOW YOUR TARGET, AND WHAT IS BEHIND YOUR TARGET]

Which was under-the-table shown during the initial sighting process. (Check target area)

But I know there's going to be some scattered damage. Mainly from the grenade blast. The front of the shrine is going to have some battle damage. And from the shooting, several trees are torn up.

EDIT: Some panoramos:

Shrine center looking in

Front steps

Approach angle for my sneak attack.

If only I had taken a moment to look for a better way up that east side...

Little red bridge on the northeast side...

Nightvision would have been nice for that fight...

Nice. Thanks. I might as well add that to me the song was just annoying and distracting ... AND an offense on ffnet. I would have left it with the comment about how music would have been playing in the background and let anybody interested go and find the relevant music on youtube.

Oh no, I was very pleased. I just thought I should point out that reading lyrics doesn't really evoke much. That and I don't want your fic removed from ffnet.

Nice.

If this maintains the current awesomeness quotient, I may have to cook up a trope page for it.

Although the bit about objects from different realities bringing a pocket of their own reality's rules with them...sounds familiar. Where have I heard something like that? The Open Door, perhaps?

I've never heard of that myself. But people commenting on me bringing my own bit of reality with me got me thinking about it in a more complex manner.

Two different universes have potentially different laws of physics. If the strong nuclear force is different in another universe, the moment I appear in that universe, I die.

So what makes trans-universeal/multidimensional travel functional? There has to be a mechanic that makes it work when you're crossing mediums into one where your very physics might be all but Bass Ackwards.

Enter 'Medium Transfer Principle' (MTP)

Yeah, I've had a similar idea in the back of my head for a long time with the physic transfer thing.

I love how you portray the unconcious shift into "military mode" when under a life or death situation

When one is conditioned for combat, it's not conscious thought. It's a behavioral form of brainwashing that ingranes reflexive patterns.

These patterns surface in high stress scenarios. Your brain may be off in La La land, but your body falls back on those reflexes.

It's not so much of a shift in modes, as it is a drop off of conscious action leaving only automatic responses. Military training does that so when your brain goes into mental shock that first time you go into combat, you can still do your job.

The fear reaction is of no use in the modern battlefield. A near miss from a bullet would probably scare the shit out of me. But the fact that it did so means the bullet missed. If it hit, I wouldn't know it. No point in being afraid of it. Just move it.

Eventually someone gonna drop down and sleep. Imagine some guy found in a girl's bed completely knocked out, shotgun in hand and crab-phone vibrating like mad.

Let's see... as of chapter nine... 25-27 hours awake.

As of chapter 11, 25-27 hours +45 minutes.

But now we'll add in massive physical and mental fatigue... I may only be able to keep my self on my feet for a little while here.

Extra-universal objects carrying pockets of their own reality with them is actually a pretty common concept in fiction, i've heard of it myself plenty of times. Granted they never went so in depth as to explain that differences in strong nuclear forces = you go boom, but it was close enough.

As for the military mindshift thing, I think Admiral-T explained it pretty well. The entire concept behind reflexive training is so that when your concious mind can no longer cope with a situation that it forces your body to fall back on ingrained reflexive actions, hence fight or flight. For most people its running, but for those whom have undergone battle focused training the natural response (indeed, the insticntive response) is to fight, through pain, fatigue, and even injury. While an easy concept to understand its difficult I think for people that haven't undergone it or witnessed it in action to fully understand. Honestly I think that the kind of mental stamina one has after undergoing such training is nothing short of terrifying in retrospect.

One thing though, aren't the guns from TTHE actually a fair bit more awesome than an actual real gun? I've only got the barest familarity with the setting, but for some reason I seem to recall their weapons being a fair bit more impressive than a comparible real life version.

edit- As for the butterfly effects, perhaps the reason Zoicite showed up a day early is because Rei transformed and he homed in on it? If it really is a day prior to what was OTL then that would mean he might have sensed her energies and come to investigate, and when he instead finds only the old priest he decides to take advantage of the situation? And from all that it just ends up snowballing into the situation it ended up being? There is nothing to suggest that Y-guy won't show up the next day afterall just like OTL, just that the series of events that led to Usagi getting to the shrine in time to help no longer becomes nessisary.

Still, I expect the outcome of events to have severe reprecussions on the SM setting, or at least on Rei in general. She's just witnessed a "normal" human turn a Dark General into chunky salsa with a shotgun. Not only is that likely to leave a lasting mental impression (for instance, she probably won't be so gung-ho in the future after having witnessed how easy it is to die) but she and the other Senshi might decide to try to include the police or military into the picture, since if one guy can kill a Dark General with a shotgun, what must a whole platoon of guys with automatic weapons be capable of? Not saying its a good thing, just that they might consider it. Regardless, i'm sure ol' Pluto is over at the time gates getting good and steamed right about now.
