RIAA argues personal copies ripped to computer are unauthorized

I would put it into my other copyright thread, but I figured this story deserves it's own topic

http://recordingindustryvspeople.blo...-brief-in.html

It was only a matter of time before they started claiming something like this.

The RIAA wont stop until people just boycott the music. If music can't be downloaded to an iPod you can bet the RIAA would go kaput.

Meh, haven't they made this argument outside of court for several years now?

Besides, from what I remember, the MPAA has already managed to get a ruling in their favor regarding similar actions taken with DVDs.

And this is why we avoid big record labels. It's not like the money actually goes to the artists.

The RIAA, if it could, would sue people for playing music in their car while another passenger, who is 'unauthorized' to the rights of the music, is listening as well. So no surprise there.

The RIAA can only get away with its shit because of its political lackeys in Washington. I say to Americans, find out if your congressmen or senator is on the take and vote for the other guy come the next elections instead of always bitching about.

Most artists make the vast majority of their money on tour I believe. They should just all get together and start an internet download service once their contracts expire, IMO. This just hurts them as well.

How come there is no equivalent of the RIAA in other Western countries? Why is there no illogical royalty BS in Britain where the record labels still demand more royalty payments after the intial broadcast of TV shows with music content, forcing the studios to edit out the music content from re-runs and DVD releases of said TV shows? The music industry is also getting funny about private musicians playing licensed music in public establishments like bars and coffee houses. I feel sorry for you Americans having to put up with these boorish and greedy pigs that are blatantly committing such widespread cultural, financial, and social destruction...

Didn't Vyper put up an article a day ago about the British equivilant of the RIAA's attempt to sue a garage because its employees play their music too loudly?

Another reason why they get away with it is that music is far from the minds of most voters in comparison to the issues of our day. Because of that, they're not going to vote a guy out of office because he's a crony for the record labels and put into office someone who disagrees with 90% of their viewpoints and who, in their minds, probably turn into a record label crony anyway.

there's the CRIA in Canada and BREIN in Europe to name just a couple, so it's really a worldwide thing, it's just that the US crap gets the most publicity because they try to get away with more stuff.
