WIP - Hawkeye Corvette

Hey all. I know this 'looks' finished, but it's not quite. A good bit of work to do on it. It was finished, but I decided to change the entire feel of the ship, to get more aggressive with the model before it's textured in PS.

Criticism welcome, of course.

Nice!

Criticism: It's not blowing anything up!

Neat, it looks cool. Good work!

What's the big cannon thing in the centre? It looks a bit unsupported is my worry. I also like the turrets, but it looks a bit like their arc of fire is limited by their placement. You could probably move them to the edges, or add another one on the vertical surface.

Aye, the turrets were a bit limited, and the cannon was a little un-balanced. That's all fixed now.

Thanks... It will be blowing things up soon...

I do believe the external mesh is complete. Alls that's left is the interior and texturing.

The Hawkeye is a multi-role Corvette-class vessel. With the addition of the modular weapons slots, it can preform many duties. It can preform boarding ops, bombing runs, patrol duty, escort duty, dogfight, and even kill missiles in the defense of friendly capital ships.

Hope you enjoy!

I really hope you enjoy. All that's left is creating the interior, and of course texturing the beast, adding some lighting, and creating a few scenes.

Let me know what you think! Any critique?

This image is for Rye - so you knows on the anti-corvette outfit of the ship (using the modular weapons) the turrets are in better positions.

The ship looses 20-30% delta-V with the anti-capital outfit, due to having to lug around all those anti-capital torpedoes.

I like your work so far - both this and the Harbinger. The corvette reminds me of the Monsoon gunboat from Babylon 5; which is certainly a good thing. I like the weapons layout, but the diagonal wing-things on top look a bit... off, though. The just don't seem to match with the rest of the shape.

Can't wait to see it properly textured.

I like this ship better than your other one (which I couldn't make heads or tails of).

Actually to me it looks like a Sulaco Dropship mated with an Asgard... Still good!

Nice detail.

Thanks guys!

I agree. A cross between the Asgard, Monsoon, and the Colonial Marine's dropship, for sure! Except that's not how I planned it, but whatever...

I guess the diagonal wing-things look a little weird, but meh... They're the cloaking generators, they'll have to do.

So here's the latest installment. Ahh, detail, in the interior... I have a color demo and a look at the cockpit. Don't mind the 3DS MAX biped, he's there for scale purposes.

There's a few doors to other sections of the ship, some lights, ventilation shafts, pipes, power conduits, a holographic table (for discussing battle plans and sensor data) and even a gun rack filled with Magpul's new Masada, modeled by yours truly. (don't know how prevalent it'll be in the future, but I had the model laying around, so why not use it?)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magpul_Masada

I need to detail the console, add chairs, fix up the lighting, and of course texture the damn thing. I might add the crew if I feel like it.

So, thoughts and/or criticism?

Wouldn't seem an issue on another class but bridge area seems a little over-exposed for a warship.

...unless it is just the Observation Deck/room, used as decoy to aim at while the command deck/bridge is deeper in the ship.

Thanks for the comments. Glad you guys are thinking.

Alright, here's my reasoning to what you see on my ship.

Primary power is provided by a reactor not unlike the blacklight power system:

http://www.blacklightpower.com/process.shtml

They have a reversible - polarity battery system as backup power; and the thrusters, both primary (forward/reverse velocity altering) and secondary (maneuvering trajectory altering) thrusters use an electric atom-vibration system to provide thrust. (basically, they break apart atoms 'gently' - at the sub-atomic level, stripping away electrons and protons from the nucleus. The resulting force is used to propel the ship. They use heavy to super-heavy materials for this reaction) This process is not based on theoretical physics, but rather electrical engineering and plasma physics.

If you're interested in the science involved, check out this page... It may change your views of science forever.

http://www.holoscience.com/synopsis.php

Floor Plan:

So, as a result, the engineers used doors with more traditional analog locks (although automated unless systems fail) and other systems that may look more traditional and old school then seen in most science fiction, designed to add survivability to the ship and the ship's crew in the event of massive power failure.

Questions? Comments? Flames? Winks?

I think the doors would look nicer if they were raised off of the floor. I like the work on the interior though, and the outside it cool too.

Aye, I was looking at that... I"ll see what I can do. Thank you.

Aiyel, aye, I have yet to post the schematics. So here they are...

Yes they are messy. But I'm not sure I'm going to model that... So this'll have to do.

What do you all think?

My only concern is, you made your "Backup control room", a nice big target. While it is only a backup control room, making it an easy target sort of you know, defeats the purpose of having it. The backup should be in just as much of an armored and hard to reach place as the main control room.

I mean, if they shoot the front of your ship, and the backup goes, then the primary fails for some reason, what then? You're boned, that's what. Unless you have a backup-backup control center.

Just make the back-up CnC an observation deck and reconfigure it somewhere else

I like it, both due to the quality of the mesh and the fact you actually thought out the interior layout a bit. Granted coolness has it's place, but sometimes I like to see a design that strikes me to be at least plausible. Despite that I am tempted to nitpick the engine/ship volume and fuel/ship volume ratios as they seem a bit small, but given what it is I can ignore little things like that.

As such the only real crits art wise I have for it are these:
  • The previously mentioned exposed cockpit.
  • The relative open and uncluttered nature of the interior so far.
Maybe it's just be me, but it almost feels like more of a pleasure ship than one meant for military duty. Such designs have a tendency to try packing in everything thats needed for the designed mission with the human crew squeezed in almost as an afterthought. If you want to get a feel for what I mean, try pulling up images of military ships and vehicles to see what their interiors look like. Particularity those of current navel vessels, but that's assuming this holds true in your universe.

Never the less very well done, I look forward to seeing more of your work.

Alright... I've been thinking, and I'm going to start over with the inside, pretty much re-work it from scratch; and I've just remodeled the entire outer area. The other version DID look way too under-armored. So here you will see exactly how thick the armor on this bird is. The original was meant for optimum pilot visibility; the new is meant for optimum survivability. I was first looking more to modern helicopter designs for inspiration. Now I will mix that with next-generation submarines and blend it with military utilitarianism.

Stay tuned, let me know if you think I'm headed in the right direction. I really appreciate the feedback, really challenges me to keep to my best in the artistic process.

(as much as I hate to remodel everything UGG!)

The greebling and paneling is starting to look really good. I still think your secondary control room is far too exposed with those giant windows. Make them much smaller, chest to forehead high slits would be great with heavy armor around them and maybe some blast shutters.

Thanks! Ok... I do believe I like it a bit better now. Much more armor, blast shields, and small openings...

What, per chance, do you think?

nicely done

maybe some visible rails on the outside of those lower panels so that the window covers can pop out and then slide down.
