Chavez blows bridges to Colombia

Literally, according to the Colombian government.

Apparently two border bridges were destroyed by Venezuelan soldiers. Not many details and no sources in English yet, but I'll post them as soon as I find them.

No, but it's big in the drug trade. Wonder how many of those civies were smuggling coke.

Google translation is your friend...with some translation difficulties.

This sound like an escalation here given the tension over Venezuela's support for FARC.

Colombia has some oil reserves, I think, but not too much. I think they supply a lot of their domestic market.

On the other hand, since Venezuela's farming has been so mismanaged, Colombia supplies a great deal of Venezuela's foodstuffs. A great worsening in tensions would probably go worse for Chavez than for Colombia.

More grand standing by Chavez. He took down a few rickety locally built bridge. So he can claim he "blew up bridges" but not anything of real value

Considering that Chavez actively supports the FARC, which are the main culprits for drug manufacturing in Colombia, I think he'd know exactly how many were "smuggling" coke into Venezuela.

I'd be more worried about Venezuela invading Colombia than vice-versa.

That's because you bought into the Dubya neo-con(Jew) propaganada. Venezuela is a peace loving republic and Hugo Chavez is the most kindest, gentelest, most wonderful man in the world.

*URK*

Chavez has long had a history of picking on Columbia, mainly to paper over the problems in his own nation. There was a NYT article a week or so ago that talked about the sorry state of the power and water infrastructure in Venezuela. Odds are he is is just grandstanding for the people and maybe get something from Obama.

So Chavez is not only paranoid but also tries to blame all fault to Colombia and distract Venezuelas people away from internal problems. That's what a dictator does. Is there someone on SB who happens to be a good sniper?

Some people burn bridges, Chavez says they're pussies.

So what are the military capabilities of both countries?

While its true that Chavez has made friends with Iran and the Russians are willing to sell him stuff since he has cash I doubt either are close enough to help him in a war situation.

He is correct in a round about way, FARC provides protection for a major part of the Colombian cocaine production, even do they are not all that involved in it as a producer, that creates to many PR problems.

Very numerous (combined over ½ million), and for the Colombians some very hard nose light infantry an mass, if they weren't so preoccupied at home they could make wonderful allies in A-stan.

Colombia some 220000 men in 7 light division complemented by mobile units and special forces.
Navy operates 4 frigates and 2 subs as well as a division sized marine unit. The airforce seems mainly to be geared for COIN with few serious combat aircrafts, mostly Mirage/Kfir.

Venezuela have some 60000 men in 5 infantry and 1 armored division with AMX30 and Scorpion90. The navy have 6 frigates and 2 subs and operates a brigade sized marine unit. The airforce have some 50 combat planes F5, F16, Mirage and their new SU-30.

So it turns out that a radical socialist autocrat isn't actually that good at managing an economy?

Big surprise.

Come now!

Surely you know that any problem in any socialist paradise is the fault of the evil capitalist world being nasty to it.
