"Standard" Destroyers of World War II
I would suggest for the US that the Fletcher class would be the standard United States World War II destroyer although classes before and afterwards were also produced in good sized numbers.

British: O&P class war emergency. Admittedly the J/K/N class could also be the 'standard type'.
Japanese: Kagero class. The French 'standard destroyer' is somewhat unclear, they basically built two distinct types, the very large contre-torpilleurs and the smaller types more or less equal to those of other countries.

How would you compare specific features of each class using the Fletcher as a benchmark?
These are categories which I can see Speed Range Turning Ability Surface Firepower Anti-Air Firepower Torpedo Battery ASW Capabilities Ability to Withstand Damage

I know this is not what You are asking...
Fletcher class Speed ok Range Good some might say extensive Turning Ability poor Surface Firepower Good Anti-Air Firepower Good Torpedo Battery Adequate ASW Ok Ability to Withstand Damage? This is a good question. Destroyers as a rule fair rather poorly in this category. If almost 50% of Your tonnage is the Engine assembly then each hit with a 150mm(5,9'') will mass a destroyer pretty badly. Only thing that a destroyer has going for it in this category is the damage control. USN damage control is considered "World Class" As for the Japanese destroyers every thing after Fubuki was a standardized design. 2000t 33kt 5 to 6 127mm(5'') guns and 25mm AA. Jap ships had more TT with weak AA Germans went with larger faster ships with bigger guns. Nazi had more speed bigger guns bigger ships |

Slight nitpick, early and mid-war Fletchers carried ten torpedo tubes.
Fubukis, Kageros, Akatsukis etc all carried nine torpedo tubes throughout most of their service lives.

Yeah, Apocal...
But what torpedo tubes they were! The Long Lance was bigger, more deadly, faster and longer ranged than any other torpedo in WW. Killed a lot of ships...

Undoubtedly. But I was responding to this:
TT - Torpedo tubes. I suppose I could've included the fact that many late war DDs had one of their torpedo mounts removed to make room for more AA mounts, but this thread is mostly about navies other than the USN.
