Uh... yeah... "destroyer." Who the fuck are they trying to fool? Although it is interesting that they mention it can carry fifty trucks. Insofar as trucks have about zero usefulness for any kind of naval warfare or amphibious warfare. Then again, if this is what they call a destroyer, the "truck" could very well be a fucking main battle tank.

Just a bit like their 35,000 ton Yamato class battleships armed with 16 inch guns

I don't know about you, but that looks pretty offensive to me.

Helicopter destroyer is certainly an offensive name. It sounds like something tasked to shoot down helicopters.

"Destroyer" in itself is a pretty offensive name. You'd only use it to destroy things.
"Peace Cruiser" would be nice, but their Consitution prevents them from having cruisers. *shrug*

To be fair, the preceding DDH ships, the Haruna and Shirane Classes, really were destroyers.

I thought the restriction wasn't the naming convention, but the displacement tonnage.
They can call it whatever they want, so long as it doesn't violate the displacement tonnage rules.

uuuuummmm..... kinda limited in range from the looks of it, until they get a harrier or -35B.
At which point I intend to stay well away from the west coast.... just in case japan gets an itch to re-enact the good old days.... Juuuuuuuust in case.

What's really interesting is that they intend to operate only 4 helos (three SH-60J and one MH-53E) even though the hanger can hold 11 SH-60s.

It's logistics, likely. They'll probably buy F-35Bs or perhaps some AV-8Bs(until the F-35B is ready). Granted, I can't see them getting AV-8Bs, first because it's no longer produced, so they'd have to get old airframes, and also because why get it, when in 3 years, the F-35B will be ready.
But, it depends on if Japan goes forward with procuring the F-35, the US is requesting 1billionJPY for basic information, and will only disclose more advanced information after Japan commits to purchasing it. So right now, no one knows for sure if Japan will get F-35s, As or Bs. Granted, the building of this class of ship certainly makes it seem likely they would.

It's almost similar in size to ROK Navy's Dokdo-class amphibious assault ship.
With a hypothetical capability to carry up to 11 aircraft minus the 4 helicopters, how many of the 35s would the Hyuga be able to carry? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dokdo_c...s_assault_ship

As pointed out, between 10-11million. But that's just for basic information, nothing about its stealth systems or anything of that nature. It's likely mostly to do with its lift fan and basic shape.

Wouldn't more buyers be a big help to the F-35 program? Why set limits on a U.S. ally's ability to buy into the project?

They had helicopter destroyers before this one, like Commander mentioned they were actual destroyers, just with some degree of enhanced helicopter support facilities.

Because the US wants to ensure people are actually going to buy the airplane, not just get all its secrets and build their own. Japan has a decent aerospace sector, and could easily build a plane like the F-35 if they got their hands on the more important details. So the US wants to ensure that they're not going to run off and make their own, they want the sale, and are only willing to part with insignificant details for $10mil, which is the normal price for joining the project(thereabouts) at the lower levels for just basic knowledge. Level 3s are all paying under $500mil, but over $100mil for their acceptance into the program. Israel and Singapore are part of the Security Cooperative Program members, Israel paid $20mil to get into it, don't know how much Singapore paid.

Didn't the US have security issues with the Japanese at one stage, like how they sold their sub propeller CNC machines to the former USSR?
