Russians becoming more active.

Today 2 Tu-95's were intercepted by first Danish, then Dutch F-16's and after that by the RAF. This wasn't the first time this year, what's up with the Russians picking up on this Cold War habit again?

Sticking their stick into NATO. Did the same stunt near Canadian polar region.

I think its a test of political will or to check out what type of response they get for ECM purposes.

Obviously those Dutch/Dannish/British war mongers were violating Russian airspace.

Nothing new. Few months ago, russians sent their AWACS to mess with baltic states, Germans (who were tasked with air policing at that time) scrambled pair of Eurofighters to intercept... Russkies send pair of flanker escorts to chase the Jerries away, both sides played some cat-and-mouse for a while, untill finally Finns got annoyed by this shit going around near their airspace, and sent their F-18s that finally caused russians to bugger the hell off.

Fun stuff, like reading a cold war story .

Also, on fun but unrelated note, their latest hugeass military excercises had scenario of defending belarus from polish minority uprising, then repelling polish invasion .

If your going to test the reaction time of your neighbours.I think choosing
an air frame from the 50s dosen't really do anything than generate a warm
fuzzy feeling of nostalgia for a war which they lost

Wait, how far were they into NATO airspace to be intercepted by the Dutch and British?

True but then again I doubt they would use a newer aircraft in case they went down due to the cost to replace them. The Tu95 is a nice aircraft to use to test reaction times and ECM/radar effectivness. Why provoke more then you need to? They just want to recreate the probing they did during the cold war after all and I think both sides know this.

Also a good reminder that they can still launch heavy bombers well into NATO airspace with or without escort. A good point to make when pushing eastern europe into doing what they want.

Its not a heavy bomber its a recce aircraft it couldn't bomb anyone who had any sort of air defence .
Russia needs to sell its oil and gas to Europe just as much as we need to buy it.Playing wargames I am sure pleases everyone involved.
But its basically reinacting the cold war at the tax payers expense.

Somewhere over the North Sea skimming Danish, Dutch and British airspace I guess. They never enter the airspace, that would be a violation of our sovereignty.

Still makes the same statement considering the size of the Tu95. As for the oil yes, russia needs them to buy it but this still makes the point of "play it my way instead of the US way".

As for your last comment... it's RUSSIA they went bankrupt doing this crap and trying to keep up with weapons tech the first time around. Of course they will dick wave with no real point aside from politics being involved.

Although I get the feeling we are sorta arguing the same points but I am misunderstanding your statements due to english not being your first launguage.

I could see the Dutch popping their canopies and drive by the TU95 with paintballs...

Sounds like the Russians just fucking with people like they've been doing for decades. Playing cat and mouse games with subs, poking into NATO airspaces...this kind of shit is nothing new. It's probably what they consider to be 'realistic training', i.e. the leadership just want to fuck with us to see how much we flinch.

They started doing that some time ago actually. Back in 2006 was when they really started ramping back up, after the post-Cold War doldrums. Part of it is the bomber forces angling for a bigger slice of the procurement pie by strutting their stuff for Moscow, part of it is just the usual Russian nationalist bravado, but a great deal was a general feeling that NATO was taking advantage of Russian weakness, and a sense that they'd become too vulnerable against the West.

There was a paper that was released around then by a couple of US foreign policy wags that stated NATO could now first strike Russia with little chance of retaliation. It made no waves here (although it was noted by some on SB) but it Russia it caused an uproar. Shortly after the Russians conducted several aggressive bomber penetrations that took NORAD rather off guard. It was a high profile way of demonstrating to us, but more importantly their own people, that they still had some bite.

The airframe may be from the 1950s, but the Tu-95MS was built new in the 1980s.

No, it's a cruise missile carrier, capable of launching Kh-55 ALCMs (6 or 16), Kh-555 CALCMs (6 or 16), Kh-101 ACMskis, or Kh-102s (8).

Its also a great endurance ELINT bird, capable of staying up without refueling for an extreme length of time, with enough antennas to detect the queen changing TV channels from the Scottish air defense identification zone...

Yeah, they've been doing this for awhile. IIRC, a couple weeks ago, a pair of Raptors intercepted some Russian Bears doing the same thing. And as was pointed out, they started this up again a few years back to flex some muscle to show everyone they're still there.

It isn't just BEAR-H bombers doing it, of course. Tu-160s have gone up as well. I think it's a bit of a thrill for NATO pilots to go up and get a look at the BLACKJACKs, awesome-sauce machines that they are.

Yes, but given how few 160s Russia has, the odds are excellent it'll just be a Bear

Not that the 95 doesn't look cool, I had that high-res image of the Raptors intercepting that Bear as my wallpaper for some time.

is it a conincidence that there's this thread in the forum right now? yes, NATO is doing something different than has been agreed on in 1990 and russia got shafted, so it's no wonder they're trying to get back a bit to where they once were.
