Obese boy placed in foster care by judge

Mother wants her 3-year-old back, but judge says the woman and her son have a serious issue with food.

A Jackson mother is being kept away from her son for overfeeding him to the point of morbid obesity.

Jerad Ostrander weighed 120 pounds at age 3 years, prompting Probate Judge Susan Vandercook to place him in foster care and limit exposure to his parents.

The average 3-year-old weighs about 33 pounds, according to medical charts.

The boy has lost 50 pounds since he was placed in a foster home in October, but Vandercook ruled recently that Jerad's mom has not learned her lesson.

Amanda Redmond brought her son fast food to a supervised visit.

"I had a concern for why she brought McDonald's food as a snack at a visit," Vandercook said in a July 9 review hearing. "He came into the jurisdiction of the court because of eating that was life-threatening."

"You haven't realized the serious issue you and your son have with food," she told Redmond.

Vandercook said Redmond uses food and drink as a way to appease the boy.

Redmond is allowed to visit her son three hours a week, supervised by a caseworker. She has taken parenting classes and has started court-ordered therapy to address the overeating issue.

Vandercook said the mother still minimizes the health risks Jerad faced by being fed too much.

"I was doing something wrong, but I'm really not sure what," Redmond said Friday. "He started growing fast at 3 months and just kept going. He really isn't a big eater."

Redmond's mother, Linda Redmond of Michigan Center, said Jerad was not fed differently than any of her other grandchildren.

"It seemed like every week he'd put on 5 pounds, and that was just on baby formula," Linda Redmond said. "He got so big it scared us."

Amanda Redmond acknowledged she has to "do a ton of things differently" to prove to social workers and the court that she can raise a healthy child.

"I love him and just want him back," she said.

Katie Rezmierski, an assistant prosecutor who represents the Family Independence Agency in abuse and neglect cases, said the plan is to reunify mom and son.

"But it depends on whether she does what the judge has asked her to do," Rezmierski said. "It is not just a case about a fat kid, but of serious and potential deadly health implications."

Rezmierski said the boy could barely move when he was removed from his home, and that Redmond had not followed up on medical testing to determine if there was a physical cause for the boy's weight.

"In addition to the McDonald's meal, she once brought candy to court and took Taco Bell to him when he was in the hospital," she said.

Redmond's family contends the FIA has a double standard. They claim a family member saw the foster parents and a caseworker feeding the boy french fries and a sundae at a local restaurant. Further, Linda Redmond said, one of the original social workers was a 400-pound woman.

A 3-year-old, however, eats and drinks what adults provide him. The fact that Jerad is down to a healthier 70 pounds indicates he was eating the wrong foods and too much of them, officials said.

The FIA reports Jerad is active and healthy in the foster home and is on a strict diet that does not include fast food.

The boy's father, Jason Ostrander, moved to Florida in the spring and has not seen Jerad since then. Vandercook has suspended his visitation privileges. He is supposed to undergo substance-abuse evaluation, attend parenting classes and get a job, and has not done so.

The couple was never married. They and Jerad lived for the baby's first six months with Jason's mother, Wendy Carlson. Amanda then moved home with her son and now lives on her own.

"He was fine then, but after that I don't know what happened," Carlson said of Jerad's first six months. She said she had voiced concerns to Redmond many times about her grandson's obesity.

She last saw Jerad three weeks ago and said he was "very much healthy, happy and active."

Carlson, who moved to Florida, said she hopes Redmond can comply with the court and be able to get her son back.

"She really does love Jerad, and I think she has tried her darnedest," Carlson said. "If they take him away from her for good, I will adopt him before anyone else does. I love that boy so much."

Vandercook will revisit the issue in three months. She set a review hearing Oct. 15.

As long she keeps feeding him with food that is unhealthy for the child then keep the mother away from the child. Bad food habits is all she brings.

Yet there was that odd graph out... could it be that this was a tainted model - with its assumptions "tweaked" to fit prejudices by climate-change "deniers" funded by the oil industry? No - the graph that contradicted all the others was the one based not on a model but on satellite measurements.
