17-year-old sexual assault victim could face charges for tweeting names of attackers

The thing is, while drinking at a high school party, especially to the point of it being passed out, is a majorly bad decision.... it still absolutely requires someone to decide to commit sexual assault for sexual assault to happen. Or in other words, sexual assault is not remotely a logical consequence of this bad decision on it's own, it requires an outside decision to happen.

That there's a higher risk factor does not make it somehow not a criminal choice that was decided by the person and does not justify blame-the-victim BS. It is still entirely the choice of the assaulter to do so and culpability is in their hands.
  2. FBH What is Project Zohar?

Drinking till you're unconscious isn't the best idea but you know what, a lot of people do it and don't get raped. In fact, drinking too much when you're young is pretty normal behavior. It's not smart but it's not like she decided to drive home or anything. She got drunk and sleepy in what she thought was a safe environment. On the scale of bad decisions that's somewhere above "leaving your windows open on a hot night in a low crime area".

No, I'm afraid it is. You said you had no sympathy with her because she made a bad decision. You might not see that as a outgrowth of rape culture but I'm afraid it is such an outgrowth. The fact is that in any other crime it would not be an issue. We accept as people that crimes generally do not happen when everything goes right and there's no risk factors.
  3. SkylineDrifter Master of the Obvious

    Correct.

None of which negates the effectiveness of intelligent decision-making with an eye towards keeping one's self out of harms way, or my opinion that she made a bad decision when she chose to attend a party where she knew kids would be drinking. It isn't "blame-the-victim BS", it's common f'ing sense.
  4. Harry Leferts That Suave Kaiju

    Then you're an idiot.
  5. Q99

But you're still focusing on what 'she should've done' rather than the culprits.

Or in other words, your "common f'ing sense" seems to focus a lot on placing blame on the victim.

Here's some common sense for you: The people behind the crime are the ones responsible for the crime, and someone misjudging a situation and being victimized does not change that.
  6. SkylineDrifter Master of the Obvious

    She wasn't raped.

I said that I have "little sympathy" and that the whole mess could have been avoided by by better decision-making. Apparrently, you assumed that I was referring solely to the victim, which I wasn't. The decision to hold the party and allow kids to drink, the decision by the victim to attend, the decisions by the perps to attend, the decision to drink too much, the decision whip out a cell phone and take nudie pics of a 17 year old girl.... It wasn't as though someone set out to commit "sexual assault" that night. It was a mess of bad decisions that snowballed into the story we're commenting on.
  7. Username Redacted I like books.

    Vs. Debate.
Fell: I think Harry would win. You're a stupid sack of shit, Redacted.
    Me: I'm glad we agree.
  8. Q99

Though only one of those decisions was the problem, and if it wasn't for that then probably the worse that would've happened is a hangover.

I'm not sure the point in trying to spread the blame as widely as possible. There's one decision on a completely different level than all of those others and there's no reason to treat it as anything but. Spreading it around just sends the message 'it's not so bad if you do this!' when that's not the case.
  9. The problem is, as I see it, that you seem to place the blame (however little of it) on everyone.

While I agree that passing out at a party is not a good move (not only for the possible sexual assault, passing out drunk is a bad move period)*, it's not her responsability to not make herself a target; it's the responsability of everyone to not rape/assault/harass someone.

*: And I'm not saying that it is a behaviour that invite rape, I truly think there is no such behaviour. It's just that when I cross the street, even on a crosswalk/during daylight/etc... I still check left/right/left. It's not excusing rape, it's cynically accepting that the world is rotten.
  10. Harry Leferts That Suave Kaiju

You're forgetting the fact that if she's unknowingly drinking spiked punch, gets drunk off that, and then takes alcohol when offered that it's her fault according to Skyline.
  11. Sidewaysvision Omnipotent on fridays

To be honest, I don't care if the chick was walking naked down the street, people STILL don't get an excuse for rape.
stormbringer951, foamy, BG45 and 3 others like this.
  12. As I see it, he could have played semantics and said "Yes" she was responsible for going to the going to the party while not saying "Yes" to the getting drunk. But if he did that he is at the very least a troll.
  13. Q99

Yes. Imagine if someone took it upon themselves to run down jaywalkers.

People wouldn't be saying, "Well, it's partially their fault for jaywalking." They'd be saying "What a psycho!"

It's the sexual assault crimes that some people suddenly get super-interested in spreading the blame.
  14. wow. This topic has managed to perk up my rage in ways I didn't realize I even had. Its also making me hope Fell is never a parent, nor allowed to raise or otherwise participate in the development of children.
    Username Redacted likes this.
  15. I'm sorry...but

Are you guys actually reading what happened?

There was no penis in orifice interaction...The boys apparently took naked pictures after somebody stripped her...Hell, I'm not even sure if she was stripped totally or just her top....
  16. Harry Leferts That Suave Kaiju

Which could mean that they were rubbing their dicks all over her and taking pictures.
  17. foamy Prodigal

Oh, I don't think there's much to worry about.

I'm sorry, but what exactly is your point here? That because the guys didn't stick their cocks in, this isn't a big deal?
Exposure and Harry Leferts like this.
  18. Having nude pictures of you is NOT going to ruin your life....Embarrass you, yes, but a 17yr old? Please.

Hell, I'm totally fine with having the boys' do the full monty and have pictures circulated around the net but everyone here seems to be assuming that the boys forcibly physically assaulted this girl....Nothing indicates they did anything of the sort...

That's the reason why we have different degrees of sexual assault or are you telling me you're ok with equating "crazy neighbour who walks to his newspaper in the nude while holding his junk" with "subway rapist".
  19. That's a load of crap
She has every right to tell her side of the story and let society decide.
I hope she win's in court

more then that happened for it to be sexual assault the only thing that was not done "as far as we know" was that they did not stick there dicks in her.. but to be sexual assault more then stripped happened.

do you have any idea how badly something like this can traumatize a person?
you have no idea how this will effect her.
She has every right to tell her side of the story and say who did this to her.
Her name is sure in the public
fuck these shits that did what they did.
  20. General Schatten Retired Fictional General, Director of USCI

I dunno. Fell's in America, if Dayton could be consider a teacher and was allowed to be a parent I don't see what's stopping Fell.
  21. stormwalker628 Now partly more Canadian.

You've been skipping posts haven't you. The complaint against her has already been dropped.
  22. Gecko4lif Tristitia

    Yes.

So much so its actually legal in multiple states
  23. Good to hear
  24. SkylineDrifter Master of the Obvious

I said she's responsible for the bad decision of attending the party to begin with. Therefore, by extension, she bears some level of responsibility for any of her own actions resulting from that original bad decision. I don't see how that is unreasonable or makes me an idiot.

So how am I being trollish?
  25. Harry Leferts That Suave Kaiju

Because she hadn't gone there to drink dumbass. But then, if she didn't know about alcohol being served there, you would still consider it her fault. Hence, you're an idiot.
