A Familiar Pain (ZnT thread #22)

^I tried to write her once, I still have the draft somewhere. It involved just-before-S2 Azula being summoned, blamming the Avatar, suspecting being in the Spirit World and being overconfident enough that the kiss caught her off guard. Then the runes allow her to understand the language.

It ended with Louise closing the door to her room after her familiar, who was quiet, and finding herself pinned to the wall with a blue-flamming fist reaaally close to her face. Then Azula would proceed to play pursued-by-rebels noble princess to another land and made Louise swear not to reveal her identity to anyone in fear of being discovered by any potencial "spies".

After that everything is Azula manipulating Louise while unknowingly stopping thinking about her own land. She would reveal herself (princess) to Henrietta before Albion, and somehow try to eventually secure herself a nice position in power so that she can... well do something, that would be the main conflict with her in the plot since she doesn't have a Fire Lord anymore and doesn't know if she can return to her world.

In the meanwhile she actually gains a "friend" in naively loyal Louise (runeswisperinginsideyourmind)... Then there's war and everything and she "forgets" (runes!) about her original intention.

Something like that, yeah. Not actually instant Bad End.

Another Shikkoku No Sharnoth snippet. My writing style seems rather boring...

  3. Zeful Out of my mind, please leave a message.

Depends when and how you pull her. For example, pick her up right after Ty Lee disabled her and she'd believe Ty Lee killed her. Picking her up after Boiling Rock, and she'd act normal, right up until she finds out nobody knows how she got there, and no one can get her back, then emotional breakdown as every dream and aspiration she's had are now permanently beyond her reach, pretty much what happened to her in the finale, only all at once. If she's been bound, any mind-fuck on the part of the runes will help her rebuild, but she will be far more dependent on Louise than is probably healthy.

It could work, but it'd require someone with a little more background in psychology than most of us have.
  4. I'm not sure if its been suggested yet...but Louise summons a Honey Badger. Discuss. :p

I admit, you have a fair reasoning for Sparda acting the way he is, though it's not...ah, fic has tainted me.

    Three things though:

    1: Scary Shadow

2: Sparda is smart and knowledgeable in trans dimensional mechanics, considering his seal

3: if he doesn't get back it's a bad end for DMV considering he doesn't seem to have sired Vergil and Dante yet.

Hm, still working (sort-of) on the ZnT/VS, so repeated and new question time:

    1) The translation effect, does it apply a specific language if bi-lingual or do you "just" understand it (thus, realizing a translation is in effect)?

    2) Is it both ways, and if so constantly or only when desired? For instance, if the Familiar wanted to speak in Language B so only those who knew Language B could understand them, would it work or would it be translated by default?

    3) In this story, Guiche never barges in during Henrietta's request for Louise to acquire her original letter. Instead, he is caught by Kirche escaping into her room when someone starts passing through the hall and he wants to avoid being seen snooping on someone (he never had the duel, so being seen snooping around a female student's dorm could be really awkward, let alone if they find out he was snooping on the Princess as well / someone asks why Henrietta was privately in there). Made to spill the beans by Kirche, would she, Guiche, and Tabitha fly in to relieve Louise still, or without the Fouquet event would they just wish Louise well and cover for her as she's gone? Or would Guiche be so dedicated to Henrietta that he wouldn't blab to Kirche and Tabitha even being teased?

    4) Similarly, how should "Louise never weakens the Vault for Fouquet" play out? My understanding was that Fouquet / Longueville would be willing to spend at least a few more days trying to make progress, since suspicion at the Academy had not built up and even if the Vault was no-go there would be other valuables to steal (spell components, money, etcetera). When Wardes / Masked Man appears, they coerce her to forget the Vault and move toward Albion to get the mercenaries for stopping Louise & the Familiar. Does this sound plausible, would Wardes instead ignore Fouquet / Longueville, or use her as a source within the Castle?

    5) Is there any immediately-siezable political advantage (besides the obvious of "Keep the damn letter") to be gained from the Henrietta-Wales exchange? I'm not seeing anything in particular for Askeladd / politically suave Familiars to exploit, but not sure if I'm missing something.

Canonically, they leave Tristain Academy, go on the road for about a day, are attacked by "Bandits", rest a day, are attacked by Masked Man / Fouquet / Mercenaries again that evening, Wardes-Louise-Saito escape, Guiche-Tabitha-Kirche buy time. Then they fly toward Albion, are boarded / greeted by Prince Wales, get the letter, start the Wardes-Louise marriage, have Wales killed, and return with the Ring / Card.

I can see a few spots that might be politically exploited, but again - without involving the letter - there isn't much. Wales is worthless to be taken as a captive since the Reconquista could just kill him, revive, and hand him back under guise of prisoner exchange, disregarding that the Familiar would be treated as an aid / underling of Wardes [thus no incentive to cut off all his current support and allies]. I can't think of anything being done with the Mercenaries, Fouquet vanishes between the ambush and Albion siege, they have to return for Tristain ASAP to avoid being lynched by the basic Reconquista forces, etcetera. The only potential advantage I can see is if Wardes is captured, bonus points if Fouquet as well, but then that's spoiled because the mission was stealth so it can't be revealed that they were there in the first place.
  7. No offense, but you cut off at the most important part. Unless we see a proper reaction, it's the same as any 'Louise summons x' snippet, with nothing to make it stand out from the others.
  8. So by ZnT standards, she's invincible/immortal. :)

How fast is she? Is it like 'she ten feet in front of you and then you blink and she's breathing down your neck behind you' fast?

She's already beyond that of the self absorbed 'Nobles' or anything I've seen or read of ZnT.
  9. iamnuff Unapologetic

TLA crossovers are pretty cool, i suggested a zuko summon a couple of threads back but it never garnered much interest.

i think azula would react with massive violence though, either she has just lost everything because of lousie's summoning, or she had already lost it and is now being dragged out of her cell to play servant to some little pink girl as the final humiliation.

    bad end
  10. MinuSeven Vita's Mr.Bunny (also availiable on hat)

Sure, Azula would probably have a massive Villain BSOD. That's why the runes affecting her in the "not-thinking-about-home" way is so important. In the meanwhile she forms some emotional attachments and that's the thin, thin line that's keeping her in check. Cattleya would be a terrific positive influence.

But what's interesting about Azula is how utterly coldly ruthless she is. She is one of the few young villains that would be able to wait to play her hand. After seeing mages levitate or something, she'll immediately get that something is not right and play the powerless for a while. She can play the underestimated just as well as the all-powerful fighter, in fact that's one of those things that make her really dangerous.

And if there are pieces or/and people from ATLA world in Halkeginia, then it's just a question of bidding her time until she can get back home.

It wouldn't be instantly BAD END, just maybe later. Still, she'd be interesting to write, and the journey is half the fun anyway.

EDIT: She can even decide to start her own nation! I mean, look at Albion, it's such a clusterf- mess, just ripe for the taking. And she has contacts like that thief she *cough* persuaded.
  11. Lifelink Breaking a dragon's heart? That's a paddling.

That's only if she finds herself not thinking of home in the first place and judging by what she's been taken away from? Yeah that's not happening for awhile. You're also not taking into account that Azula would just set Louise ablaze for her insolence before the runes are even applied or at least incapacitate her.

Maybe Colbert's Detect Magic (Damn canon bullshit:mad:) spell might go off since Azula is a bender so there is definitely going to be some major proof of Azula's claim and all the political fallout that goes with it.
  12. MinuSeven Vita's Mr.Bunny (also availiable on hat)

I'm pretty sure Louise would remain quiet if someone was waving blue fire in front of her face. Specially if it was Azula. Then the interrogation would start and she'd sing like a birdie.

What I would count on for Azula laying low would be underestimating the pink girl with a stick that doesn't have nearly any muscle tone to be a bender, and/or paying more attention to things like Colbert or THAT DRAGON! (thought they were extinct didn't you?). That get's her the runes. Then the students lift off, pardon that was a bad attempt to pun, I mean levitate. And if that's airbending in her eyes, which just reinforces she's completely out of her element/context. I assume Azula follows "knowledge is power" so being ignorant would be very bad. Azula doesn't take risks unless she's completely confidant she can pull it off. In her head, she mioght as well be surrounded be highly powerfull people that somehow avoided detection and "moved" her, for a lack of better word.

I don't think bending would count as magic. That would really be up to the author since bending apparently has basis on chi which is a physical energy. Maybe you could equate willpower and chi but I wouldn't do it.
  13. Kyte Nya!

What's wrong with a Detect Magic spell? Most fantasy verses have a way to detect magical ability.

Would she recognize it as a dragon? It's a western-styled dragon, and Azula has only ever seen eastern-styled ones.
  14. Fancy Face ಠ_ರೃ

Personally, I think an amusing summon would be Zhao Yun, as portrayed in the Dynasty Warriors games.

Really, seeing him stand against the massive Albion army all on his lonesome, only for this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTZLSg6sCWw to ensue would be magnificient.

Yeah, she's more likely to be freaked out by the frogs, birds and other mundane animals.

  16. Lifelink Breaking a dragon's heart? That's a paddling.

My problem is pretty much that it happens only twice; Colbert talking to Osmond and during Romalia fortifying itself against Joseph. It just looks like a handwave to me that's all.

Anyways, Azula might be intrigued by the strange things around her but that would not lower her defenses enough for Louise to get the binding on. Especially if she's confused, which to me would make her all the more cautious of every little thing around her.

I don't see why Detect Magic wouldn't work on a bender since they are using a form of 'magic' in collecting energy from the sun and their emotions to produce fire from freakin' nowhere. Even if it doesn't work, her bending art and regal air will have substantial weight to her claims of being a princess no matter what.
  17. Kyte Nya!

Why would they need to cast it in most situations, though? Hell, I doubt most nobles know it, apart from teachers like Colbert that regularly oversee the summoning of possibly-magical creatures.

As to whether it'd work or not: completely authorial fiat. If we went with mdkcde's Mahou Gakusei Louise, which equated willpower to chi, then yes, it'd appear as magic. OTOH, if magic's more like D&D style, then she wouldn't register as magical. So yeah.

Also, you know, being able to shoot out lightning despite being a Fire Mage.

Any mage can pull off cross-elemental spells, but they're generally harder to cast. Since lightning is Triangle minimum, IIRC, you'd need to be Super-Square like Karin to successfully pull off lightning as a Fire-aligned mage, I guess.
  20. In anime speed, fast enough to leave behind afterimages.

hmm, though you got me thinking. While the focus of the story would be on Louise learning how to deal with her Otherself instead of having the veteran Paradoxes fighting stuff, I was wondering if using Mato/Rock when they are still learning the ropes would be more interesting.

They would come with their own bad guys too, and making Louise's life harder is always fun.

    Hmm, what to do.

    EDIT:

Still, even when it's just their very early fights, the Paradoxes are already pretty dangerous

Whoops. That's what I get for assuming the guy speaking confidently about the characters is actually the author. In my defense, I need a nap.

    1) The verbal words get translated into a language you understand. ie, you don't hear French but understands it as Japanese, you hear Japanese.

Writing however works differently, Saito reads the writing as some kind of glyph/runes and not see it as kanji/hiragana/katakana he's used to. He can still understand the writing after some learning however, the familiar runes help.

    2) This never came up in canon. You can probably have someone speak Japanese to a person who knows Japanese but Louise still hears French though.

As for your other points, I got nothing.
  24. MinuSeven Vita's Mr.Bunny (also availiable on hat)

The great problem with the binding is that it's a kiss. Nobody expects an attack in the form of a kiss. It has no apparent offensive intention.
Say Azula steps back, obviously not wanting to be kissed by some random lunatic from the unknown place she's in. But Louise still grazes her (I'd say they are about the same size) and it's considered enough for the binding to occur.

    Precisely.
