An Entry with a Bang: Non-canon stories, Part II

  1. Norgarth insert witty title here.

As long as your reactor isn't visible from outside, it glowing shouldn't matter. After all, if you can see the reactor from the outside, it meansyou've got a gap in your armor, which is a bad thing.
  2. ...indeed, I seem to remember that some of the computer games would show light coming from inside the 'mech torso even in some nonfatal circumstances, so...

BTW, speaking of carbides - is there carbide-tipped ammunition in BT? How does it behave against BT armor?

Because, there is such ammunition in real life... for coastal-defense/naval artillery at least. Specifically, carbide-tipped (for penetration) thick-walled HE with some incendiary compound added, making fragments large enough to penetrate cruiser internal bulkheads. No idea if this exists in Clancy Earth, but... ;7
  3. And if it's slutty Thora with an IQ of 180, best of all! ;7
(nothing like a girl who's a genius AND slutty!)

  4. XD You're incorrigible as always, Ed.

That was me. Here's the link to the version I posted. Good news: My desktop is alive again, so I can once more access my Victoria/Victor stuff. Progress!

... Damn the Davions for depriving us of hot House heirs... oh, well, we still have Yvonne (if Tancred doesn't get her) XD

That somehow fits with my image of Omi and her sense of humor XD

Hmm, since the Clanners aren't going to be hitting the IS on schedule, that invalidates a lot of canon events (Phelan getting captured by Vlad, Victor -or Victoria, or both twins- and Galen escaping Trellwan, Hohiro and Shin escaping Turtle Bay, etc.) What has been decided so far about that? Or am I getting ahead of what's currently important (a.k.a Antallos and/or Helm)?

Actually, I was thinking that the Clan Invasion had already been halted in my snippet, and Victoria's now retiring from military service to officially enter politics as the heir-apparent (she needed five years of military service to legally qualify for the throne of Archon-Prince). She just wants to be done with being in the military, while her twin brother is very happy to stay in the AFFC.
  6. Wouldn't she be the Archon-Princess though?
  7. Demon_Hunter KnowerOfAllThat'sUseless

No because in the Fed Suns the title is always First Prince regardless of gender.
  8. Ah, I see... that makes perfect sense, Victoria as the Archon-Prince and Victor as her Prince's Champion (to be succeeded by Galen Cox if Victor decides to make for Lyons).

I've always found that kind of funny about the Fed Suns :p

Who the hell is Isis? I dont know very much about Battletech and I have just got anoyed at the lack of progress in the plot and the very Loud Flame wars in this forum.
  10. Terrace Insane Slacker

Isis Marik, the Captain-General of the FWL after Fake!Thomas kicks the bucket (the real Thomas Marik became the leader of the Word of Blake and was responsible for the horrors of the Jihad in the original timeline).
  11. If you replace the shells with ANYTHING less dense, it will lead to an increase in weight Barricade. the only way to save weight for a radiation shield is to make it more dense in order to take advantage of the square cube law.

IIRC we are handwaving the crystalline polymer as somehow functioning as a mass of microscopic gamma ray grazing mirrors. Each time the gamma ray strikes one of the polymers its course is very slightly diverted. It strikes millions of them going through the shielding, so the gamma rays end up taking a weird route through the material.

normal reactor gamma ray path: -------------

XL reactor gamma ray path: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So even though the linear density of the material is less and would transitionally block less radiation, the deflected gamma rays are forced to take a longer route through the material.

gamma ray mirrors are currently possible, just horribly inefficient and only slightly deflect some rays. This just builds on that. The crystalline polymers used for DHS just happened to be in the perfect shape to serve as s (very very poor micro-sized) gamma ray mirror, and all taken together the numerous polymers actually make an appreciable difference.
  12. Actually, back in the 60's, Soviet research hinted at the possibility of high density hydrocarbons as being temporarily better at blocking gamma radiation. The trouble being that they'd degrade quickly in use. Disposable shielding, in the mid-to-long term.

(Or good for flash protection when you're throwing around High-gamma bombs.)
  14. Don't give Ed Idea's!!!!!
He come's up with Scary stuff by himself.
  15. Or as lightweight disposable protection. The author H. Beam Piper used this in a McGuffin in one of his novellas - the protagonists lived on a hellworld that had a sea animal with an extremely high density wax as body fat. The critters would be harvested, and the wax used to coat - I love this part! - cotton cloth overalls.

That's it. Just simple cotton cloth, heavily waxed, and it protected as well as lead for 1/10th the weight.

But it would slowly take damage and stop less of the radiation, so the coveralls were disposable... giving the folks back on the harvesting world a nice repeat market.

Tinker with something like that on a nano-scale, and you could get a plastic that would last longer, be more structurally sound, yet still absorb/deflect radiation thanks to the immense amounts of hydrogen tied up in tangled knots in the complex structure.

EVENTUALLY, it would decay and need to be replaced, but that would come under routine reactor servicing, I think.

  16. *coughs and remembers to hide that list of KYAG shit he stole borrowed from Jerry Pournelle...*

    Ed.
  17. Barricade Nyan! I mean, Myon!

*spews a good amount of coffee across his laptop screen*

    Jerry Pournelle?

Screw you Ed. Screw. You. Anything coming originally from him, plus how you think, is up there with Bolos that have willingly turned to the side of 40k Chaos on my list of "OH GOD NO" horrors. I might come up with 'big ba-boom' stuff, but some ideas you have are just flat scary.
