3. Huh? Were we reading different stories? Because I distinctly remember Acqua sending Touma flying off a bridge with a Mace. The big medieval kind. I think the only time Touma managed to screw Acqua was when he blocked his big move when Acqua was about to waste Kanzaki and the Amakusa. Who then hit him with a spell that was more or less tailor made to kill someone like Acqua. And it didn't work.

Edit: moved this here.
4. Darth Artemis Hero Prinny

Doesn't keep him from being one of those stupidly-powerful characters who need to be able to kill stars with their minds just to make sure that the Standard Shonen Hero leading the story is the only one who can beat them. Touma makes Index and pretty much everything in it into complete garbage. Railgun is the only part of the series that's worth watching, and in Railgun the supreme badass is the girl who doesn't need superpowers to be awesome.

_________________________________________________________

Louise stared in horror, the being in the center of the circle was some hideous octopus-headed dragon-man in a red kilt. She could hear it muttering something.

"Bah, this is a temporary setback. I will become a hero no matter what." Louise just kept staring, there was nothing like it and she could feel something in the back of her mind. The voice of her professor

"Miss Valliere, you have summoned your familiar, you must Contract it as well." Louise could sense both worry and a slight bit of amusement at her situation. Louise moved forwards, her feet on autopilot, and kissed the thing on its rubbery green head. She watched as the runes branded themselves on its left hand with a painful sizzling noise. The creature looked down at its hand disdainfully.

"What? Runes of binding? That is strange, yet the power I can feel will make it easier to become a True Hero. Soon I shall regain my dark power and destroy this world.

...

Later that day, the Academy Library.

Tabitha was going crazy, rifling through book after book. The 'thing' that Louise had summoned had reminded her of something from childhood stories. She had to dodge around Professor Colbert coming from another aisle with his own stack of books. Eventually she found it in an oddly bound book, with the odd title:

Necronomicon ex Mortis. When she found the specific part, she whispered to herself...

"Oh Damn..."

This is the guy I see popping up whenever I hear baseball bat and the world of Halkegania will never be the same again after the kid with the golden bat arrives.
7. Flere821 ZnT LN Expert

From the previous thread:

Well, Reinforcement is the closest thing I can think of. Helkeginian magic doesn't really focus on med/long-term body modifications, while this assassin could make his skin harder than steel for quite some time, and he's the guy who's responsible for breaking Derflinger's rusty blade host via reinforce the blade clashing against Derf, shattering the sentient blade's previous host.

And there's practical applications all over Helkeginia; albeit it's limited to the military, such as faster airships or better guns. Shame the nobles are too paranoid to allow for creative minds to make things, since elven cannons regularly outclass Helkeginia's (elven cannons can fire more than one shot before reloading, the navy's one can shoot 8 times before running out. Helkeginia's cannons can't do that). It's been stated if the nobles had just allowed for firearms to develop properly and not be afraid the new guns will take out nobles en masse, humans might have tech on par with the elves.

And before I forget, I need to amend my statement on the Kanshou/Bakuya ripoff blades; Eli's one is a set of FIVE blades, not twin blades. The telepathy and flight functions is still there though. I went back there to check something and found I got it wrong, sorry >.<
8. Link to New Worlds

ah Darth, if only people in the Index universe knew just how powerful a rock can be. Tsk tsk, too bad they all are set to work for Touma's epic heroics.

Sliver, that is crazy. And awesome. But mostly insane. Liked it!

Also, I have been watching people Skyward Sword and found that they have yet another game that could kill the people playing it. People in the Zelda world really like their thrills.

If I can get the Helkagians to visit Hyrule, I need to think of a suitably insane game that leaves them screaming "How can you do that to yourself?!"

.... ANYWAY! Inspiration struck.

More of my Zelda idea.

++++++A Link to New Worlds+++++++

"I hate you Guiche!" Louise roared for the third time, ducking just in time to let the little demons flying past over her head.

"He said he was sorry!" Montmorency shouted back, pressing herself against Sylphid's back along with the rest of the group as the demons made another run by.

“We need to land!” Siesta shouted, trying to get Tabitha's attention.

The general reply was of: “Are you mad?!” but the maid shook her head vehemently. “We can beat them!”

“Sweetheart, in case you forgot, the undead is down there!” Kirche replied from her place next to the blue haired mage.

“But if we keep flying, the keeses will bring us down!”

“Even if we manage to fly with our magic, these monsters will still be ready to tear us down. We're damned if we land and damned if we don't,” Guiche summed their situation easy enough.

“Why don't you try knocking them down?” Montmorency asked at Guiche, but at the looks everybody else gave her she dropped the suggestion.

“I really wish Link had time to teach me to use a bow while riding,” Siesta muttered and Louise couldn't help agreeing more.

Just then a skeleton “flew” by in front of them. The group, Sylphid included, stared as the skeleton, far larger than any golem they had ever seen before, landed on the forest below and raised a massive skeletal hand. Trees, dirt and rock flew in every direction at impact, along with dozens of more undead creatures.

“At least he's still alive,” Louise sighed tiredly. If that thing was still focused on Link was for a simple reason.

Tabitha suddenly spun from her place on the saddle and swung her staff around, smacking the tail of one of those demon bats. Louise immediately grabbed Siesta's waist as the maid unsheathed a curved blade and reached up to cleave the winged beast in half. Siesta almost lost her balance but Louise's hold was strong and kept her friend from being left behind with the undead.

Feeling the bloodied piece of bat bouncing off her head, Louise sent a little prayer to the founder. At least THIS one wasn't an elemental keese.

Escaping the battlefield had looked so easy at first. Link told them he would stay to take care of the undead, something they knew he could do without problems. The problems started for them when the bats, or Keeses as Siesta called them, started to swarm on Sylphid from every direction.

Tabitha's wind spell should have been enough to dispatch of all the demons.

Instead of being torn to pieces, the bats suddenly changed. Their span of wings lengthened, and large tears appearing on the leathery skin of the wings. The color of the beasts changed from an almost black purple into an ashen grey and tornadoes started to form around them with each flap of their wings.

Kirche immediately tried to blast them away with her flames.

The bats that were hit changed once again. Their tails became rock like, and wicked spikes grew all over their bodies. In the brief moment they had before trying to fly away on Sylphid, Louise could see how some of the glowing, orange saliva of those bats touched the ground and the grass immediately caught on fire.

When Montmorency dowsed a few of the bats, it wasn't all that much of a surprise when they changed again, becoming almost transparent and a curtain of water followed the little creatures around.

Tabitha had apparently considered using a lighting spell but she decided against it at the last moment. Guiche was of the same mind.

Guiche then had the brilliant idea of suggesting Louise cast one of her explosions on those bats. Since they obviously absorbed elemental magic, they wouldn't be able to absorb Louise's explosions. Louise really should have listened to that painful twisting above her stomach.

There was no explosion.

Instead the bats bloated outwards for a moment, looking as if they were about to burst... when their bodies turned completely white and started to radiate a black no-light that seemed to absorb all the colors and light around it.

Now that swarm of elemental demons were still trying tear them apart, the horde of undead was below waiting them to come down to tear them apart, and with the way their luck was holding so far, there was probably a swarm of invisible ghosts armed with scythes about to ambush them.

… No. No, that was just silly. They couldn't have THAT bad luck.

Siesta's face turned white like a sheet and then let out a frightened scream. “No! Go to the left! The Poes are closing from the right!” She shouted, trying to get Tabitha's attention.

Louise dropped her head against Siesta's plentiful chest, burying her face in their deep valley. “… What did I ever do to you, dear Brimir?”
9. Is it some kind of stone skin? If he undergoes no physical change, then yeah it sounds a lot like reinforcement to an absurd degree. If he's just pulling a Colossus from X-Men it's still pretty impressive, but it's not from the Nasuverse.

By better I assume you mean more accurate and longer range. You point out that Halkeginia doesn't have a system in place for multiple shots.

You'd think they'd at least develop it for their black ops. If they had an Earth mage transmute or reshape it it's not like a commoner blacksmith could reproduce it. Power rests with the nobility if commoners are unable to produce their own firearms and ammunition. At that point the only concern is that commoners will independently develop their own weapons.

I swear FoZ makes me want to watch its society be annihilated in a hail of gunfire. Possibly by a civilization so advanced their weapons might as well be magic.

Like...Mass Effect.

That's...actually not a bad idea if it allows instantaneous communication between a team of five.
10. Flere821 ZnT LN Expert

1) no visible physical change for skin. The LN pretty much calls the spell 'Harden' (ref Vol19 ch2).

2) Yeah, increase in range and explosive power. Accuracy, I'm not sure.

3) EarthScorpion might have said something before on how Earth mages' can't really get fine detail down, thus they should be using moulds to make cannons and not having Earth mages churn them out.
ZnT canon never addressed this option, IIRC.
11. Hello Metapod. Or Nasuverse Reinforcement to the Nth degree. Seriously if Derflinger, the Devourer of Magi, has survived superhuman swings against an army and everything, how strong is it?

Speaking of which, why wasn't Derflinger not able to eat the magic in the spell? You'd think Derflinger is the one weapon effective against a magic based defense.

...Their ammunition explodes? What...why are they not capitalizing on this ability?! They can make bombs! Why can't they load a damn trebuchet, fill it with explosives, and chuck it at an army? Golems are efficient labor, it's not like carrying it would be that hard if canons are so hard to reload. With Earth Mages constructing and providing a counterweight can't be all that hard!

God damn it...

Like I said, trebuchet. Did they go straight to cannons and skip non gunpowder inventions? Ye gods.
12. Lifelink Breaking a dragon's heart? That's a paddling.

Considering they had magic yeah they probably did skip non-gunpowder Hymn. You have to remember if the nobles make it than the commoners are going to get ideas and create it for themselves to use against said nobles so in order to keep them domesticated they have to limit advancing too much to where weaponry matches magic.
13. Well how did they discover gunpowder? I was under the impression that the elves either had the vast majority of modern tech and there was so little for the humans that people would be lucky to see one modern artifact in their lives, let alone a working firearm in action. So what provided the inspiration for gunpowder? Hell, with the Staff of Destruction they clearly don't understand the mechanics even if they have exploding ammunition, so how did they replicate gunpowder? Moreover, if they wanted to keep commoners low they could have stuck to blows and arrows.

Just....ARGH. :rage:
14. Gore17 Lord of Insanity

I agree. My personal idea is that gunpowder as we know it does exist, but lays in the hands of the Elves and the Germanians. Both view it as military secrets, and keep the secret to making it very close to the chest. The other nations instead use a magical substitute, but it's rather expensive and/or hard to make, limiting it to cannons and custom jobs(like Henrietta's muskeeters).
15. There is no concept of "science is for the good of all of us, except the once who are dead" in ZnT'verse. Thus there are much less scientists/scholars compared to Earth's Middle Ages. And considering stagnation over 6000 years there won't be much progress even for another thousand years. Until magic dies out and line mages will be a pinnacle of magic that is. And only then they'll begin to work without the shortcut called magic.
Until then there won't be mass production of gunpowder, limited to two-three alchemists over a country. Except Germania or Elves.

Nervaqus had that idea of Louise being sucked into another universe and we had a story about Empress Mercury summoned as a familiar. How about we turn the tables so Louise finds herself in DK world? And even becomes a keeper? Let's see, if she does then all her warlocks would be considered elite, at least in her own territory. And there are high chances of her becoming "just another regular small fry keeper". If she won't get across Mercury or Mukrezar that is.
16. Lifelink Breaking a dragon's heart? That's a paddling.

Hymn the Staff of Destruction was beyond the humans' comprehension so that's a bad example. This was proven when Fouquet explained she tried running her magic through it. It came from another world altogether so no one 'developed' it.The soldier carrying two rocket launchers was transported due to Brimir's wacky gate spell and used one to save Osmond thus it was given that name (You might have known this but I assume you didn't). As for gunpowder, they could be transmuting it via magic or like Drak said, national secrets
17. goldenarms Storyteller

Well, in the real world, the Chinese invented gunpowder something like two thousand years ago, except it was used for fireworks. Westerners discovered the Chinese using gunpowder and was like, "Fireworks! We could be killing shit with this!" and weaponized it.

A similar situation could have arose for the people of Halkeginia.
18. mdkcde Not good enuff.

I bet you also hate mankind for taking 50000 years from stumbling outside our caves to making videogames.

I have to ask flere about how old Halkeginia is.
19. Lifelink Breaking a dragon's heart? That's a paddling.

6000 year stagnation didn't really happen, it took that long to get them to where they are now. We've done this song and dance before :p
20. May I ask, where was this?

_____________________________________________________________

Henrietta glanced at the weapon on the other side of the carriage, its black hilt unadorned. It seemed to inhale the light, making even the well-lit and ornate carriage gloomy. The Reconquista had won at Albion and was on the march. It could only be a matter of time before they reached her own cities. She steeled her heart and hoped that Louise could forgive her.

...

Saito picked Derflinger up and walked to the window, hoping that this would make things right. The small town was the next in line for the Reconquista. The hurried evacuation was still in its infancy and soldiers streamed through the town daily. Saito hoped that his efforts would take enough time.

There was a knock at the door. He opened it, and gasped. "Princess Henrietta, how did you find me?"

"This visit can't be long, I'm here to give you something that will help." She passed over a black sword hidden in its sheath. "Do not draw this until the situation is most dire. I must go now, forgive me."

"Um... Thank you?" He watched as she faded away, he heard the carriage pull away outside.

...

Saito parried another blade before eviscerating the man who had launched the attack. A wind-blade spell passed barely over his head and he raised Derflinger to absorb the next spell. He panted, his feet slipping in the gore. There was little more he could do, thousands of men had fallen to his blade, the runes blazed merrily on his hand but there was only so much that a body could take.

The tyrants blade no blood hath spilled

He looked at the blade still in its sheath at his side. Wondering if this was the time Henrietta had intended.

But doth the spirit carve...

The ring of soldiers was closing in, hovering mages were preparing spells.

Soulcutter hath no body killed

Saito grasped the hilt, "Are you sure kid? I'm getting bad feelings from that sword." The raspy voice of Derflinger broke his reverie.

"I'm sure, I can't keep on doing this and the Princess wouldn't steer me wrong." He drew the blade, felt the depression, and dropped to the ground.

But many, left to starve.

Seventy thousand men and mages, the entire army of the Reconquista, dropped to the ground apathetic. Feeling nothing but despair. Later they would build a wall around the cursed area so that no more would stumble into its field of despair. It remained a battlefield of corpses, thousands of skeletons of men, horses, dragons. A no-mans land, at its center a boys body, grinning at the end of all things.
_______________________________________________________________

God, these swords are stompy. Had to get this one out of the way in the best way possible. Here are the specs: (Spoilers)
Soulcutter is also called the Sword of Despair, or the Tyrant's Blade. Unlike the other Twelve Swords, the Soulcutter's blade is a dull color lacking all luster that actually seems to draw light into itself, creating a pocket of localized gloom when drawn. It is also unique in that it bears no symbol or other marking on its black hilt.

Soulcutter's verse in The Song of Swords describes its power as follows:

The Tyrant's Blade no blood hath spilled
But doth the spirit carve
Soulcutter hath no body killed
But many left to starve.

When drawn, the Tyrant's Blade projects a field of total apathy that spreads to cover a fair-sized battlefield. Any creature caught within Soulcutter's sphere of influence immediately loses all interest in life and slumps to the ground in a state of profound depression. They are incapable of movement and take no notice of hunger, thirst, or exposure to elements. They will eventually die of deprivation if the Sword of Despair is not sheathed.

The critical drawback is that not even Soulcutter's wielder is spared this effect. In fact, once they draw the weapon, they cannot find the motivation to sheathe the Sword, making the choice to use the Sword of Despair the last one they make. If by some extreme intervention, like a person bearing Shieldbreaker entering the scene and covering the cursed Blade, Soulcutter's possessor will have aged at an extremely advanced rate, and still suffer severe long-term depression. Woundhealer can dispel most of the lingering mental effects, and some (but not all) of the physical deterioration.

Because of the horrific effects of the Sword, and the personal cost to the one employing it, Soulcutter is rarely drawn. Instead, it is used as a threat, where the mere knowledge that one possesses the Tyrant's Blade deters attack. Most actual uses have been out of extreme desperation or as an act of last defense. Soulcutter has also been drawn to counteract the Mindsword's influence, and it should be noted that Soulcutter "prevailed" in the sense that while the fanaticism of the Mindsword's wielder and his followers were somewhat shielded from the worst of Soulcutter's effects, eventually even they were defeated by despair.

For the bulk of the series, Soulcutter is hidden away by the god-like Emperor in an extremely remote location. Even when asked, the Emperor refuses to permit Soulcutter to become active again, citing its extreme danger to all involved.
24. thesevenwielder Pondering...

Damn you, Henrietta. DAMN YOU.
25. Sliverlord Just waiting for you to walk by.

It's hardly as bad as Unfamiliar, where she's toting around D-codes. (Okay not as such, but it's implied.)

But it could have been worse. There's still a few swords out there that are worse.
