That why the Venatori Umbrorum Dresden-files is not cover by them (the one that Harry keep think on think do have their own Wizard corps)
My point is that they can read them and get a gauge for how "da rulez" work pretty quickly, so that they know how to join the Accords and avoid getting screwed. My main points there was: 1. Having magical computers makes you harder to trick with the kind of lawyerese bullshit Fae are fond of. 2. The Accords and other things will quickly allow them to realize that the Fae have earth-shaking power, but aren't allowed to use it except under strict and limited circumstances. It'd be like if ever TSAB mage had limiters with very strict release conditions.
If she joins any side at all. Yeah, it could just be availability heuristic - the fact that the protagonists, which just happen to be female and strong, creates the impression that females are stronger when it could be much more limited than that.
I wouldn't count on it. The Faerie courts can head towards a war which could destroy most Human life on Earth; that doesn''t strike me as "Strict and limited".
Its been repeatedly established that they can't under all but the most extreme circumstances. Even after the Red Court violated BOTH their territories, they were unwilling to help the White Council, because each figured if they helped the other would attack their vulnerability.
It's been a few years, but I'm pretty sure the plot of one of the books was about the Faerie courts gearing up for war against each other, which was described as a potentially apocalyptic situation.
The Fae can do whatever the fuck they want, whenever the fuck they want to. The only question is whether or not they can deal with their opposite number's attempt(s) to take advantage of the situation. Most of the time, the fae restrict themselves only because it's not worth the risk of their eternal enemies getting an edge over them. If the TSAB angered any of them enough, or simply posed a bigger threat, there would be no restrictions whatsoever. Not to mention that in any individual encounter there would be no restrictions other than what the individual fae in question decide on. The only true restriction on any of them is the ability to act against or otherwise change their nature. If said nature is to be ridiculously violent and psychotic, they're going to be ridiculously violent and psychotic, and are wholly capable of unleashing their full might at the drop of a hat. Hopefully that all made sense. I'm running on about 2 hours of sleep in the last 48 hours so sorry for any incoherencies here.
I hope harry will get paid with some surplus naval and agency gear. Nothing that illegal, but being able to use tech, stop soul gazes, a bunch of really nifty tricks. There is likely a public database of magic, if a quarter of the population are mages. Access to that info would be a huge boost to his resource, a huge bag of trick no one will ever see coming. THere are apparently 7 vampire courts, according to most sources. THose mana entities, even though they are bound to a specific summoner or clan, using the database information, could harry use his style of magic to summon them, or at least get into contact? He has BOB with him, will he accidently leave him on top of the computer the night before, and wake up, with the captin furious as BOB has down loads the ships entire database and use its comms to access others.
Cool to see the story updated, reads very well. While I don't really get Dresden-stuff (to me it seems to be all about deus-ex machina) the story seems to work very well so far. Especially that both sides have their believes shaken. Although I feel for Fate. Twilight, really? Poor girl. But what is it with all these power discussions and random Fae trying to fight planet killing star ships about which we dont have any numbers? Guess I am on SB again. Darn it.
Dresden magic is mostly about two things: Evocation (which is the standard say-a-word-get-an-effect spellcasting, usually used for violence) and thaumaturgy (which is causing action-at-a-distance effects based on sympathetic connections, like making someone's heart explode from across town using a voodoo doll, or finding someone's location using a strand of their hair.) Well, that's mostly Lindy's fault. (Yes, it's possible to be a perfectly competent high-ranking military officer and still have incredibly poor taste in entertainment. )
And in tea. Do not forget tea. Brrrr.... This proposes a question. How Vivio respond to My Little Pony: FiM?
She would think that ponies are wonderfully cute, but mommy (the scarier one) has already taught Vivio that friendship is magic. More specifically: friendship is high powered combat magic.
Either 2010 or 2016 judging by day of the week/day of the month combination in Aces which put it in either 2000 or 2006. Vivid would be 2014 or 2020. PS. Though IIRC for this fic Dresden timeline is used as main so dates are only for main Nanoha continuity. I don't remember Dresden timeline well, but for this fic it should predate MLP:FIM.
I envision something along these lines in the near future: Harry wakes up with extremely fuzzy recollection of yesterday, hurting all over and in the medbay. All he remembers is something about training session and pink. And he suddenly finds that entire crew is way more friendly to him than they were when he arrived. And why are they calling him the newest victim of White Devil when they think he can't hear?
for a moment i thought you were going to say that people are more friendly to harry, because he has been "inducted" into their group of "friends" the same way everyone else joined up. i get that lots of the nanoha peoples will be more powerful than harry (if only because of the Devices) thats why I'm dying to see him pull something like the magic circle bullshit that he did with the holiday photos, something none of them know is even possible. when i read the line about magic being "life" i saw struck by a odd feeling. in any other fiction (or real life I guess) i would be siding with the "science guys" and discounting harry's worries as "the superstitions of a primitive man" you know, when the tribal guy takes offence to you doing basic math because he thinks numbers have a spiritual significance or something, its probably a trope by now. the difference in this case is that I'm almost certain that harry is right. might just be the fact that i prefer the Dresden files to MLGN and my bias is showing, but I'm pretty damn sure that magic is much more than just numbers and "midi-chilorians" in the Dresden files. basically I'm waiting for Dresden to do the same thing he always does when he meets people who don't believe in magic, nothing, till they get caught up in the middle of some shit thats going down, then pull something utterly absurd out of his ass, shocking everyone into a stupor. then having the good grace not to say like an asshole
Actually no friending going on just yet, sounded more like a set of tests. Of course Nanoha's idea of tests might not be the sort most would consider tests. Or result in Harry popping soulfire and freaking out everyone watching when he uses a piece of his SOUL as power.
While I do agree with you in the broad strokes, you've gotta remember Clarke's third law and Niven's corollary. Tech is magic is tech is magic. You can science anything and everything, including magic, which is what the TSAB has done, at least to some degree. That means that no, it really isn't more than numbers and faux-midichlorians. Even in the Dresden Files itself, most wizards take a scientific stance on magic (read: Spell A creates Effect B because C). Dresden is fully capable of doing things the TSAB thinks are impossible but that's not because they can't explain it. It's because they've never thought of it before, just like Dresden hadn't thought of turning Bob into a Device. A good parallel for thaumaturgy in this situation is kinda like introducing gunpowder to Europeans circa 1300 AD. They think it's impossible because they've never seen anything like it before, so it seems completely baseless, but given a bit of time to examine it they can reproduce it. Honestly, I'm kinda hoping they have a bout and he manages to hold his own. Nanoha has just recovered from rather severe exhaustion, is possibly still sealed/limited, and Dresden's magic is for the most part an OCP. I don't know enough about MGLN to make any definitive statements, but if Dresden can't at minimum put up a respectable fight with her in that condition, he's probably going to be utterly useless in any fights for the rest of the fic, and I'd really rather not see that happen.
In addition, Magic in the Dresden-verse does not violate the laws of physics as they normally would in most settings with magic. A Dresden-verse wizard cannot make flames out of water, or create spells that let them breathe lava, or anything else silly like that. This isn't "Able to do anything needed for the sake of the Plot" styled magic here, like what you would find in settings such as Harry Potter and what have you. If it exists, it's part of the world, and as such can be quantified. Even WH40K Warp Shenanigans follow logical (if highly likely to eat your mind and soul) type rules.
Per usual, the author can adjust the timing sequence to match his needs. So while we can expect that the date of these events is sometime in the early 21st century, do not assume it fully matches either storyline's canon dates until the authors says so. On the whole expenting a Nanoha-Harry tussle, she said it was not going to be a spar, I expect more of a can you learn a few useful skills with this low end device I am loaning you event. As in, can you sustain a barrier jacket (and maybe even fly).
SAy they wipe molly, dresden, even mouse, wanna bet they miss bob, who happens to be capable of interacting with computer databases. Let see what harry is capable when taught new magic by bob.
