Well I'm over from bay twelve so I'm more used to 'endless abyss of horror' thread lengths so I guess it's just a thing. hmm... I'm suddenly thinking about a cracked article written by a summoned columnist. Makes no sense at all but I find the idea strangely compelling.
Have Louise portal through time to Ancient Belka. Standard fish out of water reactions. Then have her eventually get picked up by someone who can mold her into a Belkan Knight. Her massive magical reseves should make this easy for her to be scouted for recruitment. Louis joins first to merely find a use for her self, a source of improvement, and a source of income. However, as time passes and hopes of finding a way home dwindle, she builds a life in Belka and begins to truly wish to serve and protect it and any people she has come to know. Her name change to Signum could be caused by a truly life-changing experience in her service as a Belkan Knight. it could also simply be an assumed alias (like "Centurion" in the Karin side-stories) that she has grown attached to. Or it could even be a callsign for fellow Belkan military to refer to her (like "Roach" or "Soap" CoD MW) that actually means something mundane or even silly in Ancient Belkan. Her Void powers remain undiscovered and the only significance is that she absolutely needs a device to channel her magic for spells and that her spells have an odd ability to smash through magical defenses with ease. Now, we have Louise-Signum at her zenith. A proud, elite Belkan Knight who upholds a lofty set of ideals and has managed to surround herself with beloved friends and companions. A respected and honored member of Belkan society. And then the Belkan Succession Wars begin. Everything starts to fall apart as Louise-Signum and her companions desperately try to maintain order and prevent the deaths of innocent bystanders to this age of burning. One by one, her forces fall. Trusted subordinates, friends, and allies die in the chaos. Signum's very world is slowly torn apart by the very ones supposed to lead and protect the Belkan Empire, too busy fighting over an empty throne to see that soon there will be nothing left for them to rule. The ways that Signum could be exposed and absorbed by the Book of Darkness can vary. She could have hunted for it and tried to utilize its power to stop the Wars and force a peace. She could have faced off against a user of the Book and fallen. Whatever happens, the wars drag on, Signum is now a Wolkenritter, and all that she has fought and cared for is gone. Signum is then forced to serve the Book of Darkness and its masters through the passing centuries, commiting atrocities in the name of power, vengence, or whatever for its current master before the Defense Program activates and kills everything. Signum is now a bitter and cynical warrior, having fougt thousands of battles, many of them against people who she would be glad to have called comrades. Then As occurs and Signum and the rest of the Wolkenritter are finally free of the cycle of destruction that the Book of Darkness locked them into. Things progress as in canon as they all try to build a life for themselves. Then Signum is summoned back to Halkegenia. How's this? It's a bit rough but I was hoping that others could help build on and improve this idea.
The idea sounded a lot better at first. The problem is that it sounds a little too convoluted because the end result is just an Adult Louise with an Intelligent device. And I don't feel comfortable about the idea of taking a knight from Hayate. This fic would work best if it starts at A's and tell how "Signum's" different powers and attitude create a butterfly effect on the setting. EDIT: What if Signum means "Pink" or "Pinkie"? PD: I wonder what moniker The Covenant gave to Louise.
@signum-idea: Well, it is mostly sound, I just have two or three things that don't exactely fit in your account of the events. First, if she is summoned to Ancient Belka, the succesion Wars would be way down the line, as in Old-but-not-Ancient Belka. There was a debate in the Nanoha hreads about the exact chronology of the Nanoha verse but it is usually accepted that the Book of Darkness is either Al-Hazardian in origin or Old-Old-Belka. The Guardian Kinght system might and actually probably was implemented/created later than the rest of the book but I still think the Belkan Sucesion Wars are too early in that point of time. Second, Signum is mostly Fire-attuned. How does Louise go from Void (Ka-boom) to Fire? She either keeps her explosions or changes affinity, but something must happen. It is kind of important too. Third, how about her swordmanship? How do you explain that? Where does she pick it up? What you could do is: 1º- Move her summoning to an earlier point in time. 2º and 3º- She gets into the care of a swordsman or a military/feudal leader. Since her magic doesn't work properly, she learns how to use the sword, the bow and other weapons, like the sword-whip. The magic she can do is limited to non-elemental spell, and is unstable and prone to explosion. She incorporates it into her style. (interestingly, Leavantine says 'Explosion' to certain commands like cartridge loading) She florishes under the system of the time with her morals and upraising. She's fiercely loyal but brash and reckless, prone to speaking her mind, lacking in experience. Then, the Tome of the Night Sky happens. Either in the hands of an enemy that destroys her life and lord and in an experiment creates the Guardian Kinght system, for which she is one of the bases. Or in the hands of an ally/friend, in which case the Guardian Knight system is created to preserve the best kinghts or in an attempt to save the lives of some mortally wounded kinghts (Louise included). Either way, being incorporated into the Tome is the same as Death and Rebirth. Her Void magic is gone and she gains the affinity she should always have had, Fire. Her eye color changes (pink/red becomes blue). She somehow notes this change or decides that such a change is more than it appears and changes her name. Thus Signum is born. Then time passes, the Book is corrupted, she forgets her origins, becomes the cold knight we all know. Nanoha As happens. How about it? EDIT:^That works too.
@MinusSeven Thank you for the input. This was something that was cooked up quite literally on the spot. Also, it was kind of implied that she was picked up by a swordsman or feudal leader, i.e. "someone who can mold her into a Belkan Knight." Sorry if it was not clear enough. I like your corrections/refinements except for the "Louise loses her Void affnity." That I'm a bit leery about. I was trying to go for a fusion of the two characters instead of just supplanting one wholesale over the other. In my original idea, Signum actually can't do any Deviceless magic. She needs Levantine to help her shape her spells. And as impied in my fourth paragraph, her spells will probably look and act slightly differently than canon Signum. Less flames and more armor penetration capabilities due to her void alignment canceling out other magic. @mdkcd Do you really think Hayate won't move Heaven and Earth to find her lost knight? I imagine it would be like those Arf snippets where everyone is slowly backtracking the summons and will eventually reach her at some point in the later part of the FoZ plotline.
Oh suck it up. As they say, no pain no gain. Especially in pursuit of a good story. Sometimes you just have to break a few cuties to make a good plot.
^^^Well, I just read it and also cooked up my own logic on the spot. Mdkcd ninja'd me and said quite appropriately: I was just trying to find a way to turn Louise into Signum. If we don't remove her Void affinity then we should at least flashback to as in certain points and have someone notice how Signum's spells sometimes have AMF. Maybe they disrupt barrier jackets or make it easier to blast through armor like butter. Also, she probably wouldn't be called "General of the Raging Fire". Maybe something with a zero instead? EDIT: how did I get ninja'd again?
Remember that once Louise figures out her element is void, she can use normal elemental magic proficiently. That's how she locks Saito in her room so she can put a shock harness on him in canon.
I think you could bypass the affinity problem by having fire be the devise/sword's affinity. Or have her void affinity go dormant due to voidhaxx restrictions in favor of her secondary affinity of fire.
Yeah, but No void powers means you might as well write a nanoha fic with a Signum that acts different. Let's cover up the plothole like this. Whenever Louise was alive or outside the book, she would have void powers but Tristain would lose their Void heir (if they had any.) Destiny (Voidtrolling) factors a lot in Void Mages, and seeing she will be one of the mages necessary to bring back Brimir's Void somewhere in the future she will always have Void Magic (whenever she is alive or outside the book) Give her the basic void spells she knows plus a couple she and Levantein cobbled up together over time. Levantein can greatly reduce the time required to cast Void spells (fanon states that the reason why Void spells take so long to chant is because Void Magic works on a smaller scale and this require more precision.)

Catteleya is a very, very common choice. Alternatively, you could saddle Henrietta with the void, like her fellow Gallian Monarchs.
Henrietta is already a Water mage, we can't actually use her. Cattleya, Tiffania, those are pretty much our only choices unless Siesta is an unknown royal bastard or something. (That was not a suggestion, it's horrible) I personally think Tiffania would be the best choice. The rest sounds awesome. EDIT:^At least in the anime she undid the ropes on her sisters when the Academy was attacked by the crazy Fire mage mercenary.
