Suddenly, the snow boarding scene from xXx pops into my head, where Xander Cage was surfing ahead of the avalanche he's made.

So yeah, here's a bit of a cracky idea. To everypony, Celestia is a fearless leader. She comforts them and is not scared of anything...

Or so they think. Twilight knows better. See, as it turns out, Celestia has had nightmares before. When Luna was around, Celestia used to sleep by her. But after the banishment, Celestia had issues from guilt piled onto her usual problems with nightmares and without Luna there... Celestia had problems sleeping. Until one night a young Twilight Sparkle had problems sleeping after a bad dream. Celestia didn't quite know what to do so she went by what she had read and let Twilight sleep in her bed (not like that pervs). She then discovered that Twilight makes an excellent teddy bear.

And after the issues with Nightmare Moon, Discord, and Chrysalis, the nightmares have returned worse then ever, so Celestia's been dropping by Twilight's to snuggle her teddy. Inspired by these pics:

How about adopt that picture series' narrative wholesale? Meaning Celestia considers Twilight her best friend and has grown kind of clingy and emotionally dependent, keeps dropping in for sleepovers in Twilight's bed way too often because it's her only way of spending time off and Twilight is tired of those constant disruptions to her schedule. And they have to keep it secret because everypony would assume they are having sex, which they aren't.

I find it hilarious that someone as wise, ageless and benevolent as Princess Celestia can be just as cute and adorable as her subjects. Luna is adorable because of her quirky personality and her endearing antiquated ways. Celestia really doesn't have that excuse.

I love the idea of her having her own troubles and issues. Makes her more 'human' so to speak.

No wonder their guards have to be so stoic or else they would die of HNNNNNGGGG.

Maybe that's partially how Shinning Armor got his position in the Royal Guards: His high tolerance to weapon-grade adorableness (via repeated exposure to filly Twilight Sparkle).

It occurs to me that Rainbow Dash might be a shoe-in for the Royal Guards. She's best friends with Fluttershy, after all.

Edit: One of the test involves exposing the prospective guards to the Princesses at their cuteness and see how long they can last. Before Luna came back, Celestia had to make do with Luna's filly pictures.

Trollestia's better. She either makes you laugh, or you want to stab her. Both are preferable to getting diabeetus or strange boners.

So yeah, got most of Luna's Four Guards sorted out. We have a half-dragon, a lamia, a hippogriff, and what looks like a normal, pitch black Unicorn... who's not so normal. Part of me wants to have him being the last of his family, a unique clan of Unicorns from Neighpon . The other part wants to have his parents have been necromancers. While the practice has been stamped out in modern day Equestria, it wasn't rare that there were a few running around. The fourth guards mother being one. He was exposed to necromantic energies in the womb (his mother not caring) and so came out partially undead (think something like a half-vampire without the need for blood).

Thoughts?

Why not both?

The Pitch Black unicorn MUST be called "Donut Steel" or similar.

The first suggestion I'm indifferent to. Though if he's pitch black I'd want to name him Riddick just for the shout out.

The second.. if he's part undead and the practice of necromancy is reviled, there'd need to be a damn good excuse why he'd be in such a honored position. The part-undead could be cool though. Healing magic hurt him, vague scent of decay, what is this feeling you call love sort of guy?

And Luna was starting to get the population to not fear her too....

Wasn't part of Lauren's intent, which Luna Eclipsed shows as being still in effect in part, was for Luna to be something of a Nightmare Fetishist? You know, finding Gothic or generally 'creepy' stuff like we would bunnies and cats and flowers and such?

You could certainly take it that way. Personally, I got the vibe that Luna is just severely out of touch with people. She does take pride in her talent though, and it would be a little odd if she didn't touch into parts of the night with her style.

Actually, this was before she became Nightmare Moon. The Night Guard was basically made up of misfits and outcasts. Luna was ahead of her time in which she didn't care two shits about what species you were, what you looked like, or who you were born to. All she cared about was if you were loyal, willing to protect Equestria, and had the ability to do so. You could be a peasant, a noble, Pony, or non-Pony. As long as you could and were willing to serve, she would give you a chance. And in the Night Guards your ability, not your birth or species, determined how far you would go.

Her modern notions of equality in her Night Guard back when society was feudal and medieval was one of the reasons behind her alienation from the nobility. Ironically, it made her troops almost fanatically loyal to her simply because she was willing to give anyone a chance.

Yeah, that's cool. Makes me wonder how Nightmare fits into things. I'm also pondering how they lasted 1000+ years. The part dragon, is well, part dragon. The others, I'm guessing statis spell of some sort but I'm sure you have ideas.

Nightmare came about for the same reason, Luna felt that none of her subjects (outside her Guards) appreciated her night. And her Guards were a tad bit loyal and sadly obeyed some of the social norms in that they never dared speak up as they felt it was not their place.

As for why they're still alive, they're part of the seal keeping Nightmare/Luna where she is.

I gotcha. It makes a bit more sense now. So Princess Luna was progressive in some ways in the past but today she's antiquated in others.

Here's a question, what would've happen if the Mane 6 had gotten the EoH and blasted Chrysalis?
