I've started modeling up a fleet of space opera style spaceships, which I plan to have printed out at some point. I don't have the money to do so at the moment, because I'm out of work, but hey, 3d doesn't cost anything. When printed, they'll range from about 30-70mm in length. I seem to have gravitated towards a sort of Halo/LOGH mashup. Here's the smallest one so far, a standard frigate. The next smallest is the destroyer. I honestly haven't worked out which little surface details are supposed to be escape pods, missiles, or thrusters. They're all sporting them, though, in standard sizes.
Looking good, though I think a couple of areas are a little too "square", like the sponsons to either side of the hull. You might also want to turn on anti-aliasing for your 3D suite (if you have an nvidia card, you can do it from the nvidia control panel by activating the slider on the start page and setting it to maximum quality), it'll make your screencaps look smoother. Looking forward to seeing more!
Thanks. Good call on the anti-aliasing, it does look better. I'll try to work on making those areas more interesting. Here's the cruiser. Still not totally satisfied with the front, even after going through a number of variations. And here's a space battleship. I rather like the shape of this one.
And here's the space carrier. I went with the flat top look, though it's got three normal bays on the bottom. Any suggestions on what class of ship I should make next? I'm thinking maybe a corvette?
Corvette, rapid assault vessel, a lightly armed courier vessel and a recon drone I like your style of modeling a lot, it looks very good.
Check your triangulization. You have some non-flat polygons and they're not triangulating the same way. Look at the bow - both polygons are creased from bottom-left to top-right, even though as top/bottom elements they should be mirrored. Technical criticism aside, pretty neat. I like the carrier, though it feels like it could use more bulk - hangars tend to take up huge amounts of volume. What program are you modelling/rendering them in?
How about some non-combatant vessels - fleet replenishment ships, cargo vessels, etc? Or planetary assault vessels? I think that's my main problem with my own design series, I can't figure out a way of doing those kinds of ships using enough of the same design concepts that they end up looking related. If you can figure out a decent cargo ship construction that fits your existing design work, you'll be able to make pretty much any kind of ship, and populate your universe. Another idea would be to design something for these guys to shoot up - avoid getting stuck in one design paradigm. Cheers!
I made an armored light cargo hauler or resupply ship. It carries five oddly shaped space cargo containers. I might experiment with other cargo configurations. I could probably make the thing into a modular special purpose heavy frigate.
Probably, yeah. The thing does look like a warship, even with the gigantic cargo pods. You just need to slap on some long-range missile pods and bam, you suddenly have a perfectly serviceable (though presumably fragile) warship.
Made a scout or fast picket frigate. I've got some concept art down for a corvette and a fast cruiser.
Those big engine pods on the sides scream "target", you might want to change that. Other than that, looking good.
You've got a nice, solid style going here and a pretty varied selection. I've some thoughts on details. - You weren't sure which little details should be what; those triangular hatches that usually show up amidships look like they'd be optimal for escape pods. - For that cargo ship, try changing to differently-shaped containers to denote different purposes. The one you've got currently could be bulk supplies; maybe something with a pair of long cylindrical containers on either side of the hull could be a tanker, etc. - Why not come up with some light craft for the Carrier to deploy? Not just fighters and gunships, but couriers, shuttles, dropships, etc. All kinds of things you can launch from a hangar bay.
You know what these guys remind me of? Fire storm armada. Some of your designs are quite neat, but some of them look exactly like models of these guys.
They, in some cases, are. For the most part at least. On the other, they do resemble LOGH ships as well. However, it seems to me that the only difference is the size of the general penis and two balls shape of every warship.
Better merge the scout into the corvette classification rather than frigates, as corvettes are traditionally smaller and faster. Unless you intend to make a picketship kind of deal. But using corvettes for recon will give your recon teeth as well.
Hey neat models - ( I came across this site via this link that my analytics page kicked over: http://forums.spacebattles.com/thre...teresting-in-a-homeworldish-kinda-way.233006/ ) Long story short - I'm an indie game dev working on Void Destroyer.com - http://www.VoidDestroyer.com (a 3d space sim/rts hybrid) and your models are fairly close to the art style in the game, and since the more the better am wondering if you'd be interested in some kind of a collaboration? You like modeing 3d ships, and so you'd probably enjoy seeing them in action, fighting it out, etc If you are then send me an email (via main site) or pm via this site, if not then again cool looking models!
Glad you guys like 'em. I moved recently, along with some other various shennanigans, so I haven't been making more ships. Things are more settled at the moment, so I'll get back to it. Heck yeah, I'm interested. PM sent. Heh, in the OP I mentioned that I thought they came out as kind of a halo/LOGH mashup, so yep. Didn't really draw inspiration from the firestorm armada ships though. I suppose there are only so many shapes for an "armored brick" style spaceship, and I picked a pretty common one.
You're using Blender, right? Render the images before you post them, they look a trillion times better that way. Even if you're just posting their basic shape.
Looking Good Just looking at gun coverage etc, I think you've got a major problem with those big engine pods. At a quick glane, I don't see any turrets etc providing coverage of the areas on either side of the pods. Looks like a blindspot. Admittedly, if the ranges they're meant to be fighting at mean that nothing would get close, part of the problem is not so serious. But not having any main weapons covering the port/port aft or starboard/starboard aft sectors is a pretty serious issue. Come to think of it, do you have any stern batteries? Because unless they're placed carefully, they're going to have a pretty limited arc of fire due to those engine pods!
