I recently downloaded Jade Empire from Steam, but it won't play. The initial selection screen comes up, but when I hit play it immediately says Jade Empire has stopped working. Thoughts?
Go to the Start menu, right click on "Computer", and select "Properties". At the top of the resulting window it should say "Windows Edition".
Haven't tried it yet, but a commenter on reddit suggested this guide: http://kickerblog.wordpress.com/2010/03/03/how-to-play-jade-empire-in-windows-7/ Basically, as far as I can tell, what you need is to make sure DirectX 9 is installed before you downloading from Steam. That is, 0) uninstall Jade Empire (if already installed) 1) download and install this: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=35 (note that it tries to give you the Bing toolbar, too; deselect that unless you want it) 2) reinstall Jade Empire from Steam 3) cross fingers 4) Profit Play If problems persist (for example, check that you are able to save and reload), you may also need to run JadeEmpire.exe as Administrator and under Windows XP compatibility mode (see that blog post). For further help, I suggest Google (e.g. "Jade Empire Windows 7") and/or the Steam forum for your game (Steam: Jade Empire).
Nope. It says, "An equivalent or newer version of DirectX is already installed on this computer. No install is necessary."
Note: I have not tested this out myself (just found my JE discs), use at your own discretion http://www.codecguide.com/faq_windows_issues.htm Scroll down to "How can I force a full re-install of DirectX?"
I presumed you already tried using compatbility mode and adminstrator mode, in which case, perhaps you can try following the things mentioned in this?: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2833086 Otherwise...shit, I don't know, use a *cough* copy protection testing" .exe *cough* to see if that could possibly work? Some games oddly work if I use one of those instead of the *cough* non-copy protection "testing" .exe *cough*
Try the offline installer: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=8109 1) FIRST, create a folder somewhere. It's only temporary, you can delete it afterwards. Just know where it is. 2) run the installer, and when it asks you where to extract the files, select the folder from step 1 3) go to the folder, find and run DXSETUP.exe 4) blah blah installing blah blah done (you can delete that temporary folder now if you wish) 5) install Jade Empire Note that the original guide suggested using the option to install DirectX 9 from within the Jade Empire installer, but I figure the Steam download wouldn't present you with an installer. If you, uh, borrow the installer from a friend, you could probably try that. I did try the online and offline installers on Windows 7, and the offline installation appeared to work where the web version didn't, but I still haven't gotten around to trying out Jade Empire, so let us know how that works out. Oh, and I'm not really sure whether you need to uninstall Jade Empire before installing DirectX 9, but some users on the Steam forum thought that helped, so I figure it can't hurt. *shrug*
Reinstalled my retail edition of Jade Empire, but I don't have any problems with it. (Running Windows 7 64-bit) I had to set the configuration tool to compatiblity mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 for it to not crash everytime it ran, but otherwise the game loads up just fine. I suggest following Mysterius's suggestion of using an offline installer, perhaps that'll work? (Sorry if I'm not being generally helpful for you, it's just that Jade Empire is one of the more underrated Bioware games in my opinion, and I would prefer it if others were able to enjoy it as well.)
All right, I'm uploading my copy of the DirectX9 installer Jade Empire has, just in case the June 2010 runtimes are too recent for them to install DX9 in spite of lacking the right files or something. https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B9xE4rTXkMLjQVBhUDYxbVZKTDg If that doesn't work, then I don't know what can be done beyond finding some way to manually install the necessary parts of Directx 9 you need.
What exactly does the error look like? This thread on the Steam forums sounds similar to your issue, and has a plethora of suggested fixes: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=852466 Without a closer look at your system, I can't say for sure what you need, but you could try the following (see Steam thread for details): - create "SystemInformation.xml" in (steam install directory)/steamapps/common/jade empire/data (make sure the file extension is .xml) - under properties, change JadeEmpireLauncher.exe and JadeEmpire.exe to Windows XP SP3 compatibility mode and select Run as Administrator - create folder "C:\Program Files\Steam" and copy "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steam.dll" to it (if you run into error "Failed to find Steam") If that still doesn't work, I'm not sure what else I can do short of remoting into your system (which I'm willing to do but would require your trust and cooperation). Good luck?
That...actually sounds like Steam's having trouble finding the game than a DirectX error. That or it's a fault with Steam itself, that error messages a bit ambiguous whether it's referring to the game or Steam itself. Perhaps try running Steam itself in admin mode?
Tried that. It removes the Problem Checking Steam Application message, but replaces it with a generic Jade Empire has stopped working message
Just curious, does it just say Jade Empire or is it Jade Empire _____ ______ has stopped working or something like that?
