You are aware that the usage of the word 'they' as a third-person singular has a longer history than the use of the word 'you' as a second-person singular, right? And that the use of a stroke to indicate multiple possibilities is about five hundred years younger, and considered just as invalid as the aforementioned by 'official' English style guides? And that the use of the word 'it' to describe another person is considered insulting and dehumanizing by most, regardless of your intentions and opinions?

In English if you don't know the gender of a person, you use your own.

I thought you just use the male gender when you don't know which one the person is.

That's considered politically incorrect these days. Though it really shouldn't be, as long as you use use the same gender for all cases, without bias or favouritism. For instance, no using the masculine for some unspecified doctor but the feminine for nurses.

I took english 097 at Clark College last fall, the teacher there said if you cant tell the gender of a person because the info your getting is 3rd or 4th hand and by then all that's left is maybe just a last name, then you use your own.

Way off topic I know but can I ask why the MLP:FiH discussion thread is titled All American Girl and what the different is between MLP:FiH discussion and the straight MLP barnstorming thread?

PS I think a Xanth/MLP crossover would be great idea, there tons of Xanth that would be great to introduce to ponies and visa versa
