I've seen a lot of the videos, probably more than I should have, of Moviebob/The Game Overthinker. In my opinion, he's someone who can have good things to say if he doesn't get caught on one of his hangups-but that he gets caught all too easily. Anyone else who's seen him have opinions on him?
Not a fan, to be honest. MovieBob has this annoying habit of relating one of his anecdotal experiences and then assuming that everyone shares it; and then, even when he does make good points, he makes incredibly obvious points of little insight. If you compare, for instance, MovieBob’s two-parter on how to make Sonic work in 3D, in the modern day, to Campster’s video on Sonic and speed (look for Errant Signal on YouTube!), I think you’ll find Campster making much better points, and he comes off as less full of himself as well.
Heh I kinda used to be more on his side, but I got more of a "meh" attitude nowaday, he still can make a good point, but he often feel like he's talking down to people despiste hardly being the greatest game colluminist (Extra Credits his way better than him) Plus I really don't like that his taste in video game is stuck in 90's nintendo, sure they are fun, but that doesn't mean you got to ignore everything else
I've watched both of them, and Campster's argument is much better. I liked his earlier stuff a lot better than his modern stuff, I think he's really gone downhill. Not only does he have those awful "storylines", but it seems every episode is back to grinding the axe against FPSes and just about anything not Nintendo. This. Definitely this. I actually agree with him on many of his opinions, but still don't like how he expresses it even when I do. It seems every new episode is "Call of Duty sucks, so do FPSes", and he laments their "stagnation" while giving Nintendo a total pass on the stagnation of their own franchises. Not only that, but he has this seemingly incompatible view of both loving old retrogames and calling the 80s-early 90s the "Golden Age", while at the same time insisting that games should be taken more seriously as art. For instance, he complained that critics of the ME3 ending were setting game recognition back a long time, but never pointed out that even that is still beyond the average ending of the typical NES game.
I still like Yahtzee, but growing increasingly indifferent toward Moviebob (I should check out that Campster fellow) I think playing Fallout 3 or New Vegas would blow his mind since its a FPS with a pretty immersing storyline. His Scream 4 review also had one of the worst reason to hate a movie franchise ever (especially if you consider how he's hardly that knowledgeful when it come to movie, pretty much all trivia he know are stuff you can get off tv tropes)
Haven't seen all that much Yahtzee, so can't really make that comparison. On one hand, Moviebob did like Bioshock. On the other, he complains about how Hollywood "grew up from it's John Wayne phase but how games haven't", making me wonder just how many games he's really played or even known about.
annoying nintendo/japan fanboy is the best way I can describe him stopped watching a while ago due to this obvious bias
You sure this is the same Moviebob here cause If I recall he's mentioned repeatedly he knows very little of Anime/Manga which seems to be kinda a requirement when you're a Japan fanboy.
He has obvious biases and tends to try a little too hard to be controversial ever since his Other M video. Its a little irritating as he still makes good points now and again, if he stopped banging the "FPS r teh bad !!1!" drum and chasing whatever the story of the week is his analysis would be a lot more interesting.
yeah no watch his videos about how japan can do no wrong when it comes to video games the comment about uncharted being good writing "for a western game", the stupid obsession with that nintendo guy miyamoto what's his face etc he is quite obviously a japanophile, hit not knowing much about anime or manga doesn't change that and his dislike for western devs, games and gamers is quite obvious
Oh, right, he did try to defend Other M, didn't he? I remember that being awful. You know, it was very gratifying to see all the feminist rage over Other M. Normally gaming culture is a bit on the misogynistic side, so it was just weird to see the same people protest the mutilation of Samus.
Speaking of which... http://gameoverthinker.blogspot.com/2011/10/will-arkham-city-be-this-years-other-m.html
Yeah, he's a big proponent of the "Samus had no character/voice" stance that I knew was Bullshit from day one because the simple existence of both games on either side of Other M. Super Metroid was the first game that actually gave Samus a definitive voice (that intro scrawl bringing everyone up to speed, was Samus dictating those events, she now has a voice and character that can be determined), and Fusion expanded on her voice, giving her a lot of the traits that are just ignored in Other M.
I only watch his movie review series now, because I have very similar tastes in entertainment (well, not so much the horror, but everything else) so if he likes a movie, odds are I'll like it too.
Also, that video argued that taking the game into a completely new genre with an untested studio (Prime) wasn't taking a big risk (as if Prime was just a rushed attempt to go onto the FPS bandwagon) but that returning the game to third person mode and giving it to a well-respected studio (Other M) was. Biased much?
Another valid point. Retro Studios was a huge goddamn risk; if Prime didn't pan out, Fusion would probably have been the last "official" Metroid game for a decade, easily. Except, prime was awesome and everything you'd want in a first person metroid game. Though I'm with the Extra Credit's guys on Other M for the most part; well meant sequel meets perfect storm clusterfuck.
I also can't stand his increasingly adding politics into his Game Overthinker's when it's not appropriate. This isn't about disagreement with his political views, rather it's about how it's obviously axe-grinding and using it to bludgeon modern gaming.
