I imagine that would be one hell of a loud audience, between the nitpicking and 'funny' reference-throwing.
Looks like my old late nineties Battleship is going to be installed today. It looks awesome. Also, my Grampa Frisbey was an airplane mechanic. He was also part of the group that searched for Amelia, by a then Captain Halsey. I got the documents!
Just saw the movie today. Has some impressive dakka scenes. My favorite badass parts are the part where the old veterans came to help the modern boys. And the part where the army soldier going through rehab ( lost both his legs, got prosthetic replacements ) kicked the alien's ( who was slightly taller than him ) ass. Even though the alien was wearing power armor.
Well, went and saw it and edited the TV Tropes page. All in all, it was worth the money I spent to go see it, and as a whole based on what I know the military jargon et all was mostly correct. Loved the bit where Rihanna headshotted a power-armor using Alien with the John Paul Jones's main gun XD And has been said before, the bit where the old vets of the Mighty Mo come to help the survivors of John Paul Jones and Myoko ready the ship to sail was pure concentrated awesome. And while some might argue that the alien ships should have withstood the broadside from Missouri... let's remember that the Iowa-class battleships fired 16 inch shells weighing 2700 pounds. I'm more surprised the final boss lasted so long All in all, awesome movie. Definately a must see.
It's an SB movie. Humanity fuck yeah let's blow aliens up with shitloads of fire. And yes, Mighty Mo survives to fight another day.
The part of the movie when the Missouri is trading broadsides at point blank range blow for blow in a brutal slugfest of attrition with the alien mothership for the fate of the Earth had me squeeing like a little girl. It harks back to earlier in the movie when the main hero offhandedly tells some kid that old battleships were built to 'take' damage whilst modern destroyers were built to dish it out. The aliens would now disagree. If theres any left alive after the US Navy (with help from the Japs) finishes tearing them a new arsehole. And the showdown between the amputee army veteran and the alien in power armour was suitably epic too.
That remindes me of a CS Forsester book, The Ship about a British light cruiser on a Malta convoy, quote paraphrased from memory: "She was an eggshell armed with sledgehammers" Didn't we start adding some armour to ships a while back, when we realized that a little armour realy helps if you do take a hit? The more I read, the more i look forward to the movie.
If they make a Battleship 2. I predict all 4 BBs will be in action with several more building. This seems appropriate to pay respects to the BBs And the aliens actually thought they would win such a slugfest.
I predict one going down for the iconic "You sank my battleship!" line which apparently wasn't spoken in this movie but the speaker going on to say "What you didn't know was... I've got another one." camera pulls away to reveal he's in the command center of a fully modern railgun and laser battleship!
Some armor, but not much - surface combatant protection in the modern age focuses on ECM, decoys and everyone helping each other out and trying to dodge, rather than taking hits. Aircraft carriers do carry many, many tons of kevlar armor to protect vital areas, but the current paradigm of naval ships basically comes down to "Don't get hit; if you're hit, you're pretty much fucked." They actually illustrate that very well (and terrifyingly so) with the hits on Sampson and Myoko - IIRC Myoko was one hit killed by a shot to the foredeck VLS magazine. They took more time on John Paul Jones but at that point I think the aliens were really, really pissed at a ship named after one of the more famous determinators of the US Navy. Generally the paradigm with DDGs is that any hit will kill them, so try and kill the other guy first. And Mighty Mo really shows how tough she is. While trading fire, she takes a hit from the Alien mothership, the same hit that killed Sampson and wiped out the flightline at the Marine base in the trailer. To the Number Three turret. The turret is fucked, but the ammo is still okay, and Missouri lives.
It's a bit ironic though. 70 years ago the Mighty Mo was fighting the Japanese. Now the Japanese is fighting alongside her.
And nobody wants to watch it with me. Bugger. Now I want to go and spend my money and then? I'm the only one. Bastards. Worse, it's not even available on the usual suspects right now.
I saw it yesterday. Oh yes I almost squealed during some scenes. The Missouri vs Alien ship was so made of win... Yeah, the SB movie of the year, no doubt.
Aye, that it would be... We shall see it now! Notice how SB has become a brand of sorts. Why don't we start a proper SB book/movie/game review site. The world needs to hear our vice
I'll watch it with you Posbi! Just forward me return airfare from Australia to Germany and put me up for the night and I'm there!
