http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=34395 So yeah. I have to admit, it seems rather ballsy to hire him after Green Lantern flopped and not the guy you'd expect playing an immortal warrior.
Well, this could potentially be the thing to finally send Spoony over the edge. Other than that, as usual, I'm taking my patented Wait And See⢠approach. I don't really have anything against the guy, but I've never really been enchanted with his acting, either. Then again, Christopher Lambert was no gem, so it's not like we're trying to replace the irreplaceable.
*blinks, stares* Alright, where's my goddamn shotgun? This...cannot...be tolerated! Highlander? Really? You do NOT mess with my sacred and profane! EDIT: Though oddly enough, I can sorta see visually how thy might go for Reynolds: vs.
They say he has charisma. Charisma is for James Bond. Ryan can only do comedy movies, like the comics version of a Deadpool movie. He can't pull off Highlander. If you've watched him in that Two Guys ... and a Pizza place comedy show, then you will always see him as Burg. Which was one of the best comedy characters ever. Remember that Halloween episode where his twin came and tried to kill everyone? Lambert beat a gimp ninja once with a sword. He's got skills. hahaha
So, not only do you remake Highlander, but you give Ryan Reynolds a starring role? The man has about as much charisma as a paper bag. He should have stuck to TV movies that nobody cares about or remembers. But hey, it can't be worse than The Thing remake. Right?
Well, that killed all hope that the Highlander remake could buck the trend and be half-decent. As Charok says, Ryan is a comedic actor, that's what he's GOOD at. This is not a comedic role. There is zero reason, hell, negative reasons, why this is a good casting choice. Ryan is not going to be able to pull of the necessary brooding gravitas needed for McCleod, without looking constipated instead. And to be clear, I'm not saying Chris Lambert was a better actor or anything, but his limited acting range fitted the role better that Ryan's limited acting range does.
The Amytville remake sucked, but Reynolds gave a good dramatic performance. And yeah, Burg was awesome.
So is this where everyone is forced to acknowledge that Highlander was a particularly mediocre B-movie with bad acting, even from Connery? *checks* Nope, apparently not.
Lambert plays the same role basically in almost every film, but when it works it awesome (Highlander, Fortress, Gunmen, Mortal Kombat, Mean Guns, which is probably his best film btw). Ryan Reynolds just seems wrong for this. There needs to a be a sort of "weight on his shoulders" aspect to Connor. If Colin Ferrell were like 15 years younger he would be almost ideal for this role. Or if he were a lot younger Kiefer Southerland. You want an ideal actor for this role http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Macfadyen And if they are going to go big name for Ramirez, which considering his Egyptian background, they could go Moorish with his Spaniard part, and go for Lawrence Fishburne.
Oh I know it's a mediocre film vastly overrated by people afflicted by nostalgia, I just want to see people's tears. And lick them.
HERESY, SIR. HERESY. Also, it's being remade because all the movies we can look back on with fondness and smile, need to be tarnished forever with horrible "re-imaginings". The fact that a Top Gun remake could be announced at any moment is one of the reasons I bemoan the state of the world today.
It wasn't great. It was a fun movie, and I have it on Blueray, and it's fun to watch. I've seen it three times this year. But.. It's not a great movie. Damar gave a great mini review of it in his thread.
Look lower on the page, dear sir. Top Gun 2 is already confirmed, in the works, and with Tom Cruise on board as one of the actors.
Curse my illiteracy! *Shakes fist* But Top Gun 2 with Tom Cruise? Hell yeah! I almost want to take back everything I've been saying about the remake/movie revival. Almost. The Thing and Halloween remakes are just unforgivable.
