as a non-player, I see the games the death point was likely the Dispersion of the colonies to hostile force. to much, to fast.

the first wave falling to infiltration was believable. every third-world countries and every underfunded and suppressed group on the planet stealing some of the most advances soviet tech, then building Extremely Expensive FTL colony ships without the soviets being able to do anything to stop them. that broke belief.
