Silver Surfer comes to Middle Earth

Discussion in 'Vs. Debates' started by Cancelled for A, Jun 13, 2012.

  1. Silver Surfer comes to Middle Earth through a wormhole from marvel universe to warn the Gods of their end. The World Eater has come and the only thing they can do is escape elsewhere.

    Um.. Everybody dies

It was a very nice planet, perhaps Illuvatar will make another.
    Tylonius likes this.
  4. And I thought Swarm made bad curbstomp matches.

What the fuck can Middle Earth do against the Surfer let alone fucking Galactus?
  5. Observer Spirit of Fire

The Surfer is approached by the Valar, sensing his presence and wanting to defend their creation. He disintegrates them all. Then the call is sent. Galactus eats the planet, and moves on.
  6. BeRzErKeR Indigent Madman

Well, the Valar can disassociate the planet from the material universe, such that nobody can get there without magic. Presumably Eru Iluvatar can do the same thing.

    Other than that, nothing.
  7. ttestagr Joy

The Valar ask Eru to step in. Galactus and all his heralds are banished outside of time with no issue. No one notices the completely inconsequential visit in Middle Earth.
  8. Gecko4lif Tristitia

And what feats does he have that suggest he could do that
  9. ttestagr Joy

Eru is peer of the One Above All, a multiversal omnipotent.
  10. Gecko4lif Tristitia

Pretty sure there was a debate that he didnt make all that much
  11. err...that's a bit of a stretch considering...
  12. ttestagr Joy

The universe and the Valar are just one of his songs, with even universe creating evil gods just part of the plan. Specifically, everything done on Middle Earth is part of his design, with Morgoth from the beginning being eternally pissed off that he can't break free from it.

His feats aren't as simple as sundering time space to take Valinor out of reality. Reality itself is his feat.
  13. Sidewaysvision Omnipotent on fridays

Eru has zero FEATS save creation of the world and the Valar(and, I suppose, the sinking of Numenor into the ocean.) There's a difference between surmise, authorial intent, and feats.

Saying Eru is a multiversal omnipotent begs the question of where one finds a multiverse in Tolkein's writings, because there's really only "universe" in the Middle Earth books, with Arda, the Void, et al being components of the same universe.

Eru Illuvatar does not, to my knowledge, nip over to the next-door universe where he made a world with four elephants standing on the back of a turtle, in order to relax in an utterly more whimsical environment.

Cross-dimensional transfer, inter-universal transfer, et al... those are in fact feats Galactus and the Silver Surfer HAVE. Including, in Galactus' case, universal+ DESTRUCTION and multiversal reality resetting(with the Ultimate Nullifier.)

In terms of feats, Galactus actually has more and better than Eru Illuvatar.

In terms of authorial intent, well, Galactus was designed to be God. That was the whole idea Stan and Jack came up with: "Hey, let's have the Fantastic Four square off against GOD."

He's even got a Herald to announce his arrival, doomsday portents, appears to every race differently, and has his "son" sacrifice his own freedom to secure the lives of mortals...
  14. The assembled Valar threw Morgoth out of the material universe, so it ought to be possible for Eru to have done it. Admittedly Galactus is stronger than Morgoth but the same difference applies to Iluvatar and the Valar.

Feats? How about creating the entire universe and everything in it? Quite apart, in a later episode, from rewriting the laws of physics to change Arda from a flat disc to a spherical planet, in the process drowning one continent and removing another from the surface into a different, extra-universal realm. (Post-Numenor, Valinor is not accessible except by the will of the Valar.)

Iluvatar is basically Tolkien's version of the Christian god. I very much doubt Surf can do anything to him while the reverse does not hold true - as Kinnison said, he just banishes anyone who pisses him off to somewhere else. Anyone here going on about Iluvatar feats are acting like a bunch of dick heads.
  16. The question really is, would eating this particular world give Galactus a tummy ache?
  17. How are we so sure that the Silver Surfer can steamroll the Valar and all the Maiar?
  18. gr33nG1ANT Slave to Armok

Being spirit forms he might have a problem hurting the Valar. Take that out of the equation and I have no problem with the idea of Surf beating the crap out of them. However, Surf being a threat to Iluvatar? No way in hell.
  19. AFAIK their feats are nowhere near what the Surfer or Galactus can ccomplish. Now as Eru has virtually no feats, like the TOAA it seems a bit disingenuous to say he'd be a walkover.

I cannot remember much about the creation myth from Middle Earth, but I do not recall the 'universe' being that large, in a similar way to Earthsea and Narnia - but I could be wrong...lol
  20. I don't necessarily disagree with you, just poining out that Valar are powerful gods after all

Furthermore, the Maiar are very numerous and they're essentially lesser gods
  21. Don't forget the SS tanks supernova, sits in blackhole, nothing in Tolkien would suggest that they can do that.
  22. There's no evidence either way, really
No evidence that Manwe can sit in a black hole, no evidence that he can't
  23. That's why I think the Tolkien creation myth would prove useful so we can detemine the scope of powers based from that.
  24. BeRzErKeR Indigent Madman

    This.

Iluvatar and the Valar do, in fact, have dimension-crossing feats, in addition to natural-law-rewriting feats. They're not slouches in the power arena.
  25. Gecko4lif Tristitia

You cant say he can if there is no evidence for it.

Thats like saying Drizzt dourden knows the cheat code to contra
