Since there isn't a thread for Star Trek fics but one for Star Wars (and everything else), I thought "why not?" and made this thread. If there was a thread like this somewhere, buried in the archives, well, so sue me. To be at least a contributor to my own thread rather than being a freeloader, there is the Star Trek: Republic fanfic that's in the CW section... yeah, I'm lazy, so sue me (again).
There's not much in the way of good Star Trek fanfic. Too old for this kiddies, I guess. And gerroff mah lawn!
Well, at the very least, any good fics can be posted here, as well as any ideas for one... As rare as both are. As worth a try as any!
Personally, I'm just tired of people making new rec threads for every fandom. Nothing stopped you from making this request in the general reccomendations thread.
The WHOLE REASON I made this thread was so it'll be easier to find these fics... Not that there are very many, anyway... But perhaps I can check the general recs thread anyways... Oh, and congrats on your post count: you are now the Anti-Christ!
There aren't any fics I can think of then whats on the site. I'm not to confident of Fanfic.net eithera
I've rec'd quite a few Trek fics in the past, but I honestly don't feel like CCing those recs again. They're all collected in Murazor's big list alongside other Trek fics. Just keyword search for 'em.
Well, Since it's the Recommendation & Ideas Thread, and I've been needing to get this out there without starting a new thread just for my idea... You know how many self-inserts start with the protagonist dying? I thought it would be interesting to read a "reverse SI" or "Welcome to the Real World" involving... (suspense here)... the random girl that got sucked out the hull breach in the beginning of the 2009 movie.
Hey, this is a good thread rather than having a general discussion thread. Because now I can hopefully polish the idea I have for that ST fic I've been wanting to work on as a side project while I write Dust. So the gist is that there is another Earth in the STverse that Q transplanted there from an alternate universe. Clancyverse/our Earth, basically. Where there's diverse political ideology, religion and atheism, militarism and hippies, neocons and isolationists, capitalists and socialists, tree huggers and industrialists, etc etc. But I'm conflicted on a few points: 1. I want the Alliance (what the Earth will be called) to be a counter-Federation. In that the Alliance has a few alien home worlds in it who joined (after a devastating war to all band together) but I don't know if the Alliance should be huge, like the Federation, or small/compact/powerful. By small I mean planets like Earth and colonies like Capella having 50 billion inhabitants each (or 100 billion in Earth's case) and the Alliance being an economic powerhouse that imports almost everything. In effect sort of like Britain during its golden age with a far-flung empire. This Alliance would incorporate many colonies and associate members (who look to the alliance for free trade and defense but make their own policies). Since the Alliance has to trade it maintains a massive military and sort of acts as a policeman. 2. Where should this Earth be? I'm thinking of the Delta/Beta Quadrant border, near the galactic center. Or setting it around the Alpha/Gamma Quadrant border and have them engaged in a war with the Dominion or something. 3. Original species. ----the ventiri: come from a cool world where a temperate region like the American northeast would be considered warm. They have a special fluid in their blood that keeps them from freezing so they can survive in harsh environments. They are light blue skinned with hair of any color and dimly glowing purple eyes. They are basically just like humans. ----the monicans: these are actually hirogen who broke away from the hunter society many tens of thousands of years ago and settled Monica. A nuclear war and then enslavement by an alien power (eventually freeing themselves and then another nuclear war) set them back significantly, so their technology base is maybe 100 to 200 years more advanced. I'd also use the Interstellar Concordium from the trek games as the main bad guys. Most likely set after the Borg invasion.
Wow... just, wow. Someone actually loves me! I'm touched, I really am. Anyways, I have quite a few ideas of my own, actually. I'll put a few of them up on my next post.
One of the ideas I have basically has to do with the concept of the Singularity. Many of the races in Star Trek share a number of qualities with one: the Borg, the Dominion, the Q, even the Federation have them. However, the thing is, the first two are ones that have gone horribly wrong: the Borg are like technological locusts ripping apart anything they can find to continue to advance themselves, while the Dominion is run by a triumvirate of genetically-engineered oligarchs/fascists who rule their empire with an iron fist. The Q are... well, kind of like the Greek gods, practically-all-powerful but complete dicks. The Federation, on the other hand, although they had went through a technological and societal revolution early in their history, changing the way they lived drastically, it was nowhere near as extreme as the above groups. So a story based around this idea would actually fit pretty well considering the setting; it definitely sounds like something Star Trek would explore. Any thoughts?
A story with singularity in the Federation? It;d have to go significantly AU. The whole thing humans have going in the Federation (and most of the aliens) is to better themselves. They don't do genetic engineering all that much and they don't upload their minds eventhough it is possible (like all the holodeck crap or transporter accidents). I think it would be pretty interesting though to see how the more reactionary segments of the Federation- who wants to keep their way of life the way it is and see transforming into a singularity society as opposed to the ideals of self-betterment- and the more technological/open segments clash and deal with the changes. That betterment of all mankind thing seems to be "you gotta do it using what you're born with" sort of thing. Like trying to be the best you can be without augmenting yourself.
Actually, what I meant was that the Federation itself only had some of the characteristics of a Singularity; it never had one to begin with. The closest equivalent would be First Contact between the Vulcans and humanity, where that one encounter changed the course of human development radically. Things like the Warp Drive, replicator, transporter, among others, things like that would dramatically change how society works. Before First Contact, humanity was practically dead in the water; after First Contact, Earth became a paradise. The big conflict in a potential story on this would be the dangers of Singularity Event occuring before the Federation is ready for such a development; hence it would be standard policy for Starfleet to supress potentially dangerous technology and keep it contained until it could be refined enough for widespread use. A potential antagonist would be, say, Section 31, who would use such tech as weaponry against enemies of the Federation, damn the consequences for doing so.
I went to FF.net and looked for some. By JOVE, I have never seen that much concentrated slash. It was the mother of all sausage fests.
Makes sense. I've argued this elsewhere on the forum before, but you can make a good case for the Star Trek universe to have some major grim implications when it comes to singularity-type events (technological or otherwise). The whole galaxy is littered with dead civilization and godlike energy beings of varying degrees of sanity. Given what they know what's happened to their predecessors, it's little wonder the Federation and her neighbors are so conservative on issues like genetic engineering and transhumanism. Evolution really does have an endpoint in their reality, and it's often not a pretty one.
There's a lot of problems with how Trek is presented. Not only with all the dead civilizations and godlike aliens but all the fucked up things that happen due to sub space, time distortions, or crazy people. I mean, someone fucking crazy enough could hijack a shuttle and start beaming random people into space.
I think he means the Kirk/Spock or Kirk/Mcoy slash as well. ST:2009 seems to be nothing but that, and although I have nothing against the occasional well written slash fic, it's kind of disappointing that there are few serious stories in that category. Although there's this one where the ST:2009 Kirk gets involved in the Bajoran Occupation that was interesting...
... Yeeaahh... Moving on, a Singularity storyline would be a great idea, all it would need is a proper antagonist. I have two in mind that I think would work well: Section 31 and the Iconians. The first, Section 31, works nicely due to their fanatical devotion to defending the Federation, despite the fact they completely disregard its ideals. They'll use whatever technology they can get their hands on and use it as a weapon against anyone they consider a threat - things like the Genesis Device and the Soliton Wave Generator, which have been proven to be dangerous in the wrong circumstances. The second, the Iconians, would be taking inspiration from Star Trek Online and the Armada II: Fleet Operations mod. My basic concept would be that the Iconians (like in Fleet Ops) would have invented time travel technology alongside their gateway technology - this would have given them a huge advantage, granting them incredible access to most of the universe. But, they end up overextending themselves and become embroiled in a massive universal conflict - which would be hinted to be the Last Great Time War from Doctor Who, while the primary battleground the Iconians will be fighting in would be the home galaxy of the Yuuzhan Vong (this is to allow the possibility of a crossover fic). The Iconians eventually lost, being forced to withdraw back to the Milky Way, severely weakened from the conflict. To prevent the Time War from bleeding into the Milky Way, the Q would seal it from the rest of the multiverse, creating the Great Barrier. They also place severe limits on the Iconians' ability to travel through time, weakening them further. At this point, the many races that hated and feared the Iconians, despite all of their good intentions, take this chance to rebel and destroy them. In a final desperate act to save themselves, the Iconians seal themselves away in a pocket universe, locked inside the Guardian of Forever; they cannot leave, yet can still watch the outside, as their former empire is stripped bare by their enemies, and as they fight against each other to their oblivion. Thus, the Iconians would become the perfect antagonists for the story, bitter and angry at how despite all of their accomplishments, their good deeds, and fighting for the survival of the Milky Way, they still are hated and feared; and so they plan revenge on all those who crossed them - the Q, their Time War enemies, the Alpha-through-Delta Quadrant powers - and rebuild their mighty empire. <-------------------------> So, what do you think, good idea?
It's not you, it's Star Trek. More specifically, it's that no one wants to trawl through several thousand fictions for several seasons, some of which many have a hatred for. To actually give a recommendation: Lost in the Woods, by Ardwolf A surprisingly well done (and one of the only) crossover between ST:TNG and Firefly. Q decides to test Picard, again, but this time not against an overwhelming foe, but by seeing what Picard does when he and his one ship are the ones with the overwhelming power.
Let's keep in mind that the term "slash" comes from the Trek fandom, and specifically the need to separate Kirk/Spock fics (wherein they are a couple) and Kirk & Spock fics (wherein they are close friends). Oh, and check out the awesome Going Native by Rap541, a TNG crossover with nBSG. Speaking of crossovers, a few you would never expect that somehow manage to work out great: The Fire Lances, a drabble by our own Lavanya Six that crosses TOS or nTOS (not clear which) over with Avatar: The Last Airbender.. Omphalos by Marcus Rowland, which crosses over with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The Only Logical Conclusion, a drabble by jedibuttercup that crosses nTOS with the Dresden Files, and its sequel Is There A Problem, Officer?, also a drabble, by the same author. And one that isn't so weird: First Impressions by jedibuttercup, a cross between TNG and Firefly.
