Supernatural Masquerade Shattered-What now?

So, the ever pesky ROB has it so that tomorrow morning, the supernatural is announced to the world over by virtue of his being the ROB and he will not be questioned. You turn on the news, check the internet and it's all over. Now the lack of information is critical here, so you will have only vague concepts of what you're dealing with. The general standards used will be roughly the following and are pretty self-explanatory I think:

    Exterminate
    Cure/Prohibit
    Regulate
    Leave alone

For groups revealed to the public, we'll use the following list:

    1. Witch/Warlock
    2. Werewolf
    3. Vampire
    4. Undead
    5. Fay/nymph/etc
    6. Psychic
    7. Troll
    8. Wizard
    9. Oracle/Prophet
    10. Necromancer.
    11. Undead
    12. Ghoul
    13. Succubus/incubus
    14. Alchemist.
    15. Elves

It's also made clear that this is just the beginning, though angels and the like haven't come down and there are no dragons eating Manhattan, nor any particularly strong sign of them being discover anytime soon.

For the purposes of this thread, the question breaks down into three parts:

    A) Rank the various groups/critters/people by the criteria and explain a bit of why you put X where.

    B) What would be your major concerns upon hearing this news?

    C) How you think events would proceed.

Sort of a thought experiment for SB, given how often the prospect of the masquerade existing or being shattered is discussed and argued on this site. Figure i might as well throw it out and see how the denizens respond :)
  2. Witch, wizard, physic, alchemist, prophet.Humans with a special skill set registered and given a professional code of conduct. No acts of evil summoning demons or using spell components from sentient or endangered creatures.etc
Get to pay doctor like insurance levels if they sell their services.
Necromancer do these guys do anything beneficial?Probably hunted down as criminals.
Werewolf Controlled its an illness probably slightly more popular than pedophiles able to live in the community ,but get either hatred or pity.
Vampire Undead and Ghoul exterminated unless they can exist without snacking on humans.Vampires are not going to get a free ride as how ever dark and sexy they are.Serial killing is never popular.Expect lots of law suits or slaying.
Troll extermination or protected species depends how many and how dangerous they are?
The Fay introduction into how much cold Iron Humanity has and how many interesting ways of delivering it at high velocity now exist.Cold war like relationship we might like each other and tolerate ,but, trust is not there.
Succubus/Inccubus depends how dangerous they are may go one to make money in adult entertainment market
    or hunted down and exterminated.
Elves depending on how powerful they are depends on their relationship to humanity.
If its a threat we kill it otherwise we deal with it.
  3. cpj1227 Shadow Cabal Terror Unit

A lot of those will have the responses to them depend on what they're like. Take the werewolves for example. Are they the classic type that turn into wolves and kill the shit out of anything they can get their claws on? Or do they just have a really weird STD that turns them into animal people or full-on animals when the moon is full? Are the fey types full-on Fair Folk, or are they the more modern, less sinister variety? Are the undead an existential threat waiting to happen, or are they just "living impaired" or "differently alive" as certain Discworld characters would put it?

What each of these groups have been doing to keep the masquerade up until now would also logically be part of the overall response from normals after the masquerade is broken.
  4. Skyzeta Friendly Oppressor

Well this is sort of the point. One of the things I've often found rather limited in SB discussions is they assume perfect knowledge from the get go. But in reality, for the first month, the above descriptors might be all people have and preconceptions are going to be more important than fact. Basically qualifying them kinda defeats the purpose. The whole point is who you react and how you think most people will react in absence of further clarifying information.
  5. Why was Undead listed twice?
  6. cpj1227 Shadow Cabal Terror Unit

Okay, assuming a layman's level of knowledge regarding mythology and such and a general nonhostile demeanor on the part of the majority of the supernaturals things might go something like this...

Magic users (witches, warlocks, wizards, necromancers and maybe alchemists as well) will most likely be regulated - the severity of the regulations depending on what the average member of each group does with their abilities. Necromancers would probably be hit hardest for obvious reasons, but in places like the Bible Belt there's going to be a lot of backlash both political and social towards magic-users in general now that people know that they actually exist. Conversely, in places with a more liberal attitude towards what is done with corpses (I'm specifically thinking about those parts of South Korea where people are supposedly trafficking in ground-up-dead-baby pills or whatever areas are dominated by that one religion I can't remember the name of at the moment that sets out corpses in pits to be picked at by animals) I can see necromancers flourishing. My personal reaction to this group would be to actively seek a wizard or an alchemist out - after all, what SBer would turn down the chance to learn magic if they could?

Psychics and oracles probably come out the best of all the supernaturals since people claim to be psychic IRL as it is - except with the masquerade broken they can prove that their powers are demonstrably real. Perhaps Randi would finally have to give up his million bucks.

Werewolves are going to be regulated at absolute best no matter how benign they actually are - after all, even if they're not the standard murdering horror movie werewolf in nature when transformed they're still afflicted by what amounts to the craziest STD ever. Most people are going to be scared as shit by their revealed existence, as unlike vampires the horror movie stereotype hasn't been whitewashed away by cheesy supernatural romance media. You can best believe that there will be attempts to develop cures for lycanthropy and vampirism, and that there will also be fierce debates a la the whole autism community vs "neurotypicals" thing on whether it's right to cure them in the first place if they don't want to be cured.

Vampires are going to be the most likely to be socially accepted out of the undead in general; we have people like Anne Rice and Stephanie Meyer to thank for this. There's still going to be a ton of wannabe Van Helsings out there sharpening wood in case a vampire reveals itself where they live, but they're going to be balanced out by all the Lestat and Edward fangirls and the goth kids that want to become eternal creatures of the night for real. They're still going to be regulated by most governments though, probably in the form of restrictions on feeding and heavy restrictions against turning people without going through a ton of red tape. Then again, a handful of politicians might in theory work against such legislation in return for being turned themselves, so...

The rest of the undead save perhaps for ghosts probably aren't going to have such an easy time of it, although truth be told I'm not sure there are even any mythological undead beyond spirits and vampires that are sapient so it may not matter. Later on after people get used to the supernaturals I could see people with terminal illnesses or whatever selling the rights to animate their corpses to licensed necromancers in return for cash for their families - it'd definitely save their next of kin the money they'd need for proper burials. Ghouls in particular are going to be pretty screwed unless as said above for necromancers they happen to live in places with looser attitudes towards the disposal of human corpses or unless they can eat things other than human flesh.

Unless they've mellowed out since the days of yore, things would be absolutely crazy where most fey, trolls, elves, etc are concerned if they're anything like they are in the myths at all. This goes double in the US, where people tend to think of Tinkerbell and Santa Claus when they think of fairies and elves and thus are more likely to fall prey the first fey to realize that the humans . I'm not sure if it's the same way in Europe or other parts of the world, though. Even if all the other groups are nonhostile as a whole I can still see the fey as seen in mythology remaining hostile enough to warrant extermination attempts.

I'm not even going to speculate on succubi/incubi except to say that a lot of people in Japan and a lot of people from certain sectors of the Internet are going to be very pleased that they actually exist.
  7. blast flame They cannot stop us. They cannot stop the future.

    1. Witch/Warlock - Regulate and integrate the good stuff into society
    2. Werewolf - Cure
    3. Vampire - Regulate/Cure (depending on need for human blood, personality, etc)
    4. Undead - Leave alone/Regulate/Cure (depending on threat and desirability)
    5. Fay/nymph/etc - Exterminate (crazy vindictive bastards, they'd twist themselves around anything else we tried)
    6. Psychic - Regulate and integrate the good stuff into society
    7. Troll - leave alone/cure (depending on threat/personality)
    8. Wizard - Regulate and integrate the good stuff into society
    9. Oracle/Prophet - Leave alone
    10. Necromancer. - Heavily regulate but still integrate the good stuff like maybe archlichdom or voluntary undeads into society
    11. Undead
    12. Ghoul - Leave alone/regulate/cure (depending on threat and desirability)
    13. Succubus/incubus - Regulate
    14. Alchemist. - Regulate and integrate into society
    15. Elves - Leave alone (assuming they're just long lived snotty humans with long ears)

How can we integrate all of this magic stuff into society for the good of all of us? How can we study it scientifically and use it to create sufficiently advanced magic and magitek? How can we ensure magic is available to everyone rather than a lucky few?

What the hell else is coming? How do we deal with the fey?

Why and how was the wool pulled over our eyes for so long?

Those compatible with enlightenment civilization thrive, albeit not without a period of great discomfort in the transition. Those incompatible die.
  8. Historically, necromancers weren't the guys who animated dead bodies (that's a modern invention of... D&D I think). Necromancers were guys who spoke to the dead in order to learn about the future. That Gypsy medium or psychic that you pay so you can talk to the spirit of a dead relative? They're technically a necromancer.

Okay so yeah, barring uncontrollable aggressive behavior, the world probably turns out something like the world in the Anita Blake series where everything is regulated and supernaturals each have their own lobby groups. All four options will each have their own group of advocates, and different groups will advocate different things for each body of supernaturals. But Exterminate at least won't be implemented (at least not by most First World Countries) unless the target group proves completely uncontrollable.
  9. So a necromancer is either a medium or a crazy guy into zombies hollywood beckons then:D.
I don't know if you can exterminate the fey or if it would be wise to try.Certainly they need to know humanity can hurt them and if they approach our children they will burn.Laws similar to those about not feeding alligators. We leave them alone they leave us alone. If new age hippies get upset about oppression they can be thrown in jail.
  10. blast flame They cannot stop us. They cannot stop the future.

Oh, I was definitely assuming it was possible to exterminate them. Yeah, it's quite possible that we'll just have to ignore them.
  11. It really depends on setting specifics. You can't just give a list of supernaturals, you have to give details. There are too many different versions of various monsters to make any prediction.
  12. Evil Author is correct. The idea of embodied mindless undead controlled by a mortal magic user mostly comes from the African-Caribbean religions like voodoo. Traditional Euro Nercomancers trafficked with unclean spirits for knowledge and powers they weren't suppose to have, the difference between them and witches (in the medieval sense, devil worshipers with dark powers that is) wasn't very big. They could do nasty things do you however, zombie or not.

That said, I think the reaction for the 1st month is gonna be in a word panic. Everyone be they private citizen or government agent is going to be running around trying to get as much information as possible. Things will calm down, especially once governments and corporations (God help us) start using them for fun and profit. Mortal magic users would be preferred simply because they're the easiest to understand and control (how does one pay a nature spirit?).

You can understand what motivates a 15 year old boy, even if he can turn invisible or call down fire from the heavens... Because despite all that, he's a 15 year old boy! He wants to be important, treated well and get in a hot girl's pants (assuming he's straight) and odds are good that those wants aren't listed in order of desirability.

Of course they could be completely alien and just look like us but that'll take time for us to find out. Either way they look perfectly human and are gonna be hard to catch, they should be able to ride out the problem time and make accommodation with being public knowledge.

Non-Humans on the other hands are aliens, worse they're aliens that decided to hide out in our shadow for God alone knows why? Most aren't going to want to trust them. After all if they didn't have foul intentions, why did they hide? And frankly those that fed on us are going to be seen as another set of predators to get rid of. Let Vampires live in your neighborhood? Why? You don't let Tigers or Wolves into your community, why would you let them in? If politicians start making deals, you'll see populists raising up accusing them of selling out their species to become part of a shadowy aristocracy. Anything that is traditionally lumped into the hordes of hell is gonna catch megatons worth of shit. You think Muslim Imans get pissy at western women? Wait til they have actual Succubus to rant about. And the traditional fire and brimstone preachers of places like the American South won't be far behind. Trolls might be harmless (comparably) but just about all of the traditional ones, look fucking scary at least. Werewolves? Oh man, the term rabid dog comes to mind, true or not there will be plenty of people willing to treat them as such.

Elves might be able to dodge this, they aren't known feed on us and they're pretty. The Fay is questionable, but modern civilization has plenty of ways to hurt them according to folklore and we all know it.

    Basically here's my timeline:

    Month 1 to Month 6- Panicking/Information gathering/lynching/ranting/recruiting
Month 7 to Year 1- Readjustment/Analysis/First set of laws made
    Year 1 to year 5- Accommodation/Negotiations
Year 6 to year 10- Normalization
  13. Damar Genuine Mastermind

    Yeah, try 50 or a 100.
  14. Tassadar The Overlord of Cakes.

    1. Witch/Warlock: Regulate(Human with power)
    2. Werewolf: Cure(Just a disease, we can cure it)
    3. Vampire: Exterminate(You don't keep a species who feed on you alive)
    4. Undead: Exterminate( Evil most of the time)
    5. Fay/nymph/etc: Exterminate (Bastards)
    6. Psychic: Regulate(Human with power)
    7. Troll: Exterminate ( We have too many right now)
    8. Wizard: Regulate (Human with power)
    9. Oracle/Prophet: Regulate (Human with more very usefull power)
    10. Necromancer: Regulate(Human with more power)
    11. Undead: Exterminate(Truly this time, what does it take to kill these thing)
    12. Ghoul: Exterminate (They feed on bodies)
    13. Succubus/incubus: Exterminate (They are demons, need I say more)
    14. Alchemist: Regulate(They are just with more power)
    15. Elves: Exterminate (Just because)
  15. Do the supernaturals have any organizations or large alliances? Also how do the powers of the supernaturals scale against conventional weapons? Military power and power disparity is likely to be a important factor in regards to relationships between normals and supernaturals. If the supernaturals are able to form a faction with the ability to fight the military or provide valuable services to the military then they will likely be treated differently then if they were defenceless
  16. Skyzeta Friendly Oppressor

Again, see the OP ;) The answer is essentially yes, no and everything in between according to the rumor mill. Basically you're dealing with the same sort of scrambling for information you saw on say 9-11.

And sorry bout the double undead post :p
  17. Onimech Snazzy Custom Title Here

Was wondering this too. and why are Fey separate from Elves?
  18. Skyzeta Friendly Oppressor

Most people tend to view them separately. Fey/fairies and elves as either Santa's helpers or Tolkien-esque. I'm deliberately using pop-cultural lines of division, rather than the lore, to preserve the intended focus of the thread.
  19. Damar Genuine Mastermind

This is going on a preliminary no information basis which would change upon learning more about them.

    1. Witch/Warlock - Regulate/Prohibit
    2. Werewolf - Exterminate/Cure
    3. Vampire - Exterminate
    4. Undead - Exterminate
    5. Fay/nymph/etc - Regulate/Leave Alone
    6. Psychic - Regulate
    7. Troll - Exterminate
    8. Wizard - Regulate
    9. Oracle/Prophet - Regulate
    10. Necromancer. - Regulate
    11. Undead - Exterminate
    12. Ghoul - Exterminate
    13. Succubus/incubus - Exterminate
    14. Alchemist. - Regulate
    15. Elves - Leave Alone/Regulate

Undead should be dead save for the ones who can be turned back to normal, independant magic non-humans who don't interfere with humanity should be likewise left alone unless they involve themselves, and as for the humans with abilities, regulated to prevent them from abusing their powers.

B: "Fuck, there goes my night's rest."

C: The first step would be containment, capturing/arresting as many as possibly to get a clear fixture on what exactly we're dealing with here. Find out if there are people who knew about the Masquerade beforehand and get them involved in explaining what every creature does.

The ones confirmed inmediate dangers would be imprisoned or eliminated, the latter especially in the case of undead like ghouls. The rest can be let go, but kept watch over. Give a neutral impression to the public, not condemning or condoning them save for the ones who are genuinely a threat, and protect them from potential attacks, like keeping their identities a secret or help them relocate.
  20. shipmastersane we know our DOIT and we will duty..!

we can only assume that by elves you mean the first elves of arda.

    edit.

    *wearing my idealist hat*

    Plan A:

    Default: Leave Alone for all

    The only exceptions being:
    * those with limited free will (eg. mindless Undeads) who will be detained for their own protection as well as others;
    * those with anti-social dietary requirements (eg. Vampires) which would be supplied or cured by the government;
    * all oracles and prophets will be hunted down. Kill or capture. Captured seers will be offered the option of cure, life imprisonment or bound to serve the state for the remainder of their life. Any other supernaturals with the ability to accurately predict the future or read minds get the same special treatment as oracles and prophets.

I want to think that many supernatural are simply humans with special powers who deserve the chance to live a normal life. While being assaulted by a werewolf is unpleasant, can we say that being shot in the face by a mundane human is a lesser evil? Murder remains murder, irrespective of the means in which it was achieved. I would not resort to extermination except against a threat totally inimical to humanity.

Regrettably, oracles and prophets must singled out for evil treatment. While they could be a boon to a command economy, they also have the potential to wreck our existing financial systems. In addition, their ability to uncover secrets makes them a threat as well as an asset to national security. Most supernaturals simply represent a threat to individuals, seers are a threat to nations.

If I later decide that the idealist approach is hopelessly naive, Plan B is the Technocracy/SCP-Foundation treatment for the lot of them, complete with dissection experiments.
  22. Problem: Without knowing the specific details of the setting, we can't say if 3 and 4 are separate species or not. However, given that in legend Vampires and other undead are transformed humans, they would likely be classed with the werewolves as "humans with supernatural, infectious health condition". And certainly there are going to be people who argue that whether it's true or not.

Extermination only gets justified if the target group is A) unambiguously hostile, and B) containment or some other means of restraint is impractical. The thing is, if these groups have been able to maintain a Masquerade for years/decades/centuries, then A is almost certainly untrue; the group can in fact maintain some kind of self restraint. Same goes for B, even if it requires members of the group to self police.
  23. Skyzeta Friendly Oppressor

*nods* I also want to further stir the pot by pointing out, that like all first wave information, it's reliability is going to be all over the map. Consider the difficulty news outlets have in figuring out the difference between a battleship and a destroyer ;)
  24. Catty Nebulart Catgirl Android

Leave Alone for all, though enforce normal laws, and regulate those who make a business out of it.

The laws will need some updating but asside from say new privacy rights against mind-readers and counting mindcontrol and supernatural mind control as date-rape drugs and so forth. But rule of law is paramount, and until they break the law every sentinent has basically human rights. Those that are mindless need to be dealt with, but as long as they don't harm people PETA will probably be against exterminating them.

If vampires need human blood rather than say animal blood then something will need to be done, but if say drawing from a bloodbank is sufficient then it becomes a logistical problem of encouraging more blood donations. Might want to see if we can cure it or come up with an artificial substitute though.

I doubt people would react like that though. I forsee bigotry and new levels of racism, possibly witch hunts and people in the bible belt being murdered because they are accused of witchcraft or being a demon.
  25. Tassadar The Overlord of Cakes.

Undead don't normally have free will, when I take think mindless minions or evil magic user who have free will but are evil.

Vampires I think about a species that feed on humanity and even if they could go to blood bank or feed on human, they still would feed on humans. That or people who give their soul to the devil for power.

The OP did not tell us much about them I am going with what I think they are, also you can't cure a dead body unless you uploads which we don't.
