Just came back from a 9 hours long Batman marathon. I really liked the film, although I do agree with some of my friends that it isn't as good as the previous batman movies. It certainly isn't some movie that is oscar nomination worthy. The characters are well acted in this movie, but I highly doubt that anyone will win any major award. It certainly can be a film that can be improved on. The weakness part of the movie is without a doubt the opening act, as it is really quite uneven. The movie did improve towards the middle, but I am certain a fair number of people would have a problem with it nonetheless. The scope of the movie feels really epic in my opinion, certainly more so than Marvel's Avengers. Nolan manage to involve me and the audience around me into the threat faced by the characters. We really felt that the city is really at stake and people lives can easily be lost. As for people who wants to be spoiled:
Miranda Tate is Taila Al Gul. Batman manage to fake his death. Joseph character is Robin
EDIT: Got it. Don't know about the spoiler tags.
Same here, I just got back from the midnight screening where we watched all three Dark Knight films in a row. Hell to the fucking yes. Is it a flawless movie? No, it stumbles at moments at the pacing is far clunkier than the Dark Knight (plus there are a few moments that would cause an SBer to roll their eyes). But as Bruce Wayne reminded us, sometimes people deserve to have their faith rewarded. In this case I have been vindicated, what a brilliant end to the trilogy. Now we party:
Yes, as a judge in a phony court orgainsed by Bane. Seems like that role would suit the joker a lot better.
No, Scarecrow has actual confirmed ties with the League of Shadows whereas the Joker does not. Scarecrow was also in the previous two films while Joker was only in one. Scarecrow makes perfect sense.
Two out of three of those i at least suspected, or partially knew. Overall, still not in a rush to see this movie. Kinda a meh for me, really. Kinda hard to improve on Dark Knight, i think, but i am sure i will see in the next couple of weeks.
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/tvnews.php?id=92659 From the hub a trailer for this movie. Warning awesome trailer is ahead. They use origianial voice actors to say the lines
Sorry, all that proved is that the original voice cast could never transcend the small screen. It's like listening to high schoolers rehearse for a school production of a Broadway play.
Before I go into my review, I was strongly recommend that you watch Batman Begins (if you haven't) to understand this film better. This film has more in common with Batman Begins than TDK. In a way, you can probably skip the second movie and still understand this movie pretty well. However, if you are not familiar with the first one, there are certain elements in the movie that might confuse you. A much longer review and my thoughts on the movie: This movie was supposedly inspired by the 1966 French movie titled "The Battle of Algiers" and A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens. However, I believe that this movie never really captured the soul of those two stories. The Dark Knight Rises never really bothered to explain why it is inspired by them. In a way, I felt that the film left too much things unseen and unsaid for the audience to truly understand the theme of the movie. The whole class warfare angle wasn't fully developed because we didn't get to see the rich poor divide in Gotham. We get occasionally hints of it here and there, but that's all. In order to understand the ordinary citizens' anger towards the rich, Nolan should let us see just how bad things have gotten for the poor and how much harder it is for people to climb themselves out of poverty. This also confuses the audience when it comes down to understanding the motivation of Bane. Is Bane targeting the rich in Gotham because of their lack of apathy towards the rest of Gotham? What does Bane truly want with Gotham? This are questions that was not raised nor answered in TDKR. Another thing that I have a problem with is how Nolan made Batman retired immediately after the 2nd movie. One would assume that Batman would have carried on fighting crime until the police brought things under control, as well as being hounded by the police to his breaking point. It didn't really do justice to the ending of the second film. The third problem I have with the story is the unnecessary plot twist, where Miranda was revealed to be Taila. It simply doesn't add anything to the story, nor does it help develop a central theme of the movie, that there are people that can help maintain the legacy of Bruce's parents. It also at the same time, undermines the relationship between Bruce and Miranda. I would give this film a 8/10. P.S. By the way, if you look closely, you will see that Selinia Kyle was the lady sitting with Bruce Wayne towards the end.
Just got back from seeing it and to throw my hat in the ring on political issues… (heheheh) Spoilers Bane and co are super rich people who manipulate the poor to attack the rich and those in power seemingly only to get rid of the competition? Bane is the Tea Party Sort of more seriously I wonder whether people will note Nolan’s address of one of the themes they disliked in the previous one or will they get all hung up on politics *shrugs* As to my actual thoughts I found this move as good as the others Batman films, there are things I disliked such as a particular event not being very well built up to, a part in the movie that felt like a repeat, there are things I felt that were not dissected and prodded enough (Bane as a man who can inspire fanatical loyalty is all well and good but why? Those sort of feelings suggest a personality and I did not get that) and parts I was ambivalent but no more than as was in The Dark Knight or Batman Begins. Inception remains the Gold standard for Nolan to me, but this is a worthy addition. Expect the Dark Knight and you’ll get it, expect Inception and I imagine you’ll get that to, expect the perfect movie or that particular French new wave movie experience you got from (oh say) Hiroshima mon Amour and you’ll be disappointed
Don't get me wrong, most of it sounded good and its awesome that they got the voice actors to do it, but I don't understand why Bane sounds so..... off.
That... was seriously awesome. I'm a person who's suspension of disbelief could probably be used as a material to build a space elevator, so certain things that bother other people i'm more willing to shake off(or not even notice). The only thing i would've liked would've been for the Joker to be in this, but without Heath and in respect for him that wasn't an option. I do feel like this movie would've been a full 10/10 if his presence had been continued. (my ideal ending would've been most of the movie leading up to Bane's takeover being the same, but afterward when Bane breaks the prison him letting the Joker out. Joker takes a major role in the movie and a lot of things go differently, leading up to the final showdown between Batman and Bane, where Joker turns on Bane, saving(with some flair and other things, simplified because it's 3:40 and i'm tired) Batman and then escaping back into the city. ) As is, i would've liked to see Batman be more "legendary" when he returned; retaking the city easily. Not without effort, but more like the whole scene from the end of TDK where he strings up the swat team. Just that legendary, unstoppable, force of nature type thing.
Just got back and I really enjoyed it. A good ending of the trilogy. On the issue of the whole class welfare thing I think it's meant to tie into the first film where the first plan of the LoS was to have the city destroyed by economics. So the world watches as a class revolution ruins a city and then nuke. So Bane didn't give a damn about the poor he was just using them as a distraction. As for how bad it was for the poor it is mentioned that places are closing due to lack of donations, kids working in the sewers because there's no jobs, and how the rich throw parties that actually don't raise any charity money. But all this could have been developed a lot more so having the mob run wild made more sense. Show why they though a great time for looting was right after they saw over a thousand criminal be busted out of prison and given AKs. I really liked how Bane came off as a firm believer in his mission but also one who remained calm and almost philosophical about the whole situation. Catwoman seemed kind of in the background to me. Hathaway did a great job, and looked great in those leather pants on the bike, but it seemed to me that she was overshadowed by all the other stuff that was going on. It was also neat to see an acknowledgment of the toll being Batman takes on the body...though seems a bit of technology can easily fix that. And I liked how Batman uses what he learns about Bane in the prison when they next fight. As for parts I didn't like the pacing danged at times, the whole economic arc could have been built up a lot more, cops could remember they have guns and so do the other guys, and Gordon needs to be more careful about what he writes down. All in all it's while it might not be as good as Dark Knight it's on par with Batman Begins and gives the trilogy a satisfying ending.
I just got back from the midnight showing, and I rather liked it. Now, in general, I can't give 2 shits about superheroes in any medium, so I didn't go see it because OMGBATMAN, (actually I saw it because a friend had tickets already). But the Batman movies have been pretty good stand alone movies that don't rely on previously established fandom, at least for me. I enjoyed myself, was surprised by a handful of events, which I always like, and even liked the action scenes. Everything felt pretty real, like it could actually be happening, and the CG stuff wasn't poorly done like it is in so many movies. I will say that there's more cheese in certain parts than I'd have liked, but more importantly - why does Bane sound like that?!! That kind of ruined him for me. Overall, thumbs up.
(spoilerific thoughts on the movie in no particular order) My immediate reaction to the film was "Fuck Yeah!!!" I kind of envy people (some of whom I was with) who didn't know about Talia and thus never suspected anything was up with Miranda Tate. Like most bat fanboys I figured Marion Cotillard had to be playing her pretty mucha s soon as she was signed. I did not see the reveal of her as the child from the pit coming, though. So that was nice. Was Bane's lieutentant ever named on-screen? I took to calling him Bird in my head, since he looked more like a guy who'd be called Bird than a Zombie or Trogg. I, for one, would be all for a sequel with the continuing adventures of (Blake) Batman. Who's with me?! The Bat-copter thing was a lot cooler than I thought. I have no idea if something like that could ever actually fly, but it looked more credible than I expected from the glimpses in the previews. I do wish Bane and Bruce could had somewhat quicker fight choreography, though perhaps the suit makes that impossible. Are we to assume that Bruce's knee was messed up from the fall he took at the end of TDK, or just accumulated wear and tear? I did notice that Batman's last "confirmed sighting" was the night Dent died, but I don't think Bruce or Alfred ever said precisely when he had last put on the suit. I've never read A Tale of Two Cities. So I have no idea what the parallels are. If Ledger hadn't died, I really got the sense there would have been a Joker appearance, or at least reference, somewhere. He wouldn't have taken Crane's place as the judge, but before the end we probably would have seen that he'd escaped his cell or something like that. With all the rest of the history getting touched on, the Joker did feel like a big piece that was missing. I wouldn't say Hathaway delivered an amazing performance, but she was very very good. I had no complaints. Although, I will say that the mask/goggle/ear thing never did stop looking at least a bit stupid. The Jim Lee costume really would have translated to live action damn well, I still wish they'd done something like that. She still looked stunning, though. A few of Bane's lines were unintelligible, but as a trade-off, I understood everything Batman said in the first go-round, unlike last time. I didn't quite get the cops forsaking all tactical sense to just charge at the Bane's men into a melee. At the very least, put guys with rifles and SWAT gear in the front ranks! So far I haven't thought of a really glaring plot hole or implausibility (by the movie's own standards) in the third act. In the first movie it was whole idea of the microwave attack. In the second movie it was the computer that magically turns people's cell phones into sonar devices, and the Joker's magical ability to put hide huge amounts of explosives anywhere at any time. There's nothing as awesome as the best character moments in BB and TDK, though. Bruce rising is basically a riff on Rocky III, that can't beat his training scenes or Joker's speech to Dent. Great soundtrack once again, maybe better than BB but I'm not sure how I'd rank it against TDK.
SPOILERS Absolutely loved it, but yes, there were some glaring plot holes or should I say, acts of plot induced stupidity. 1) Sending 3000 cops into the sewers as one big crowd. I mean seriously?!?! What is that going to achieve? 2) Rushing gunmen with AUTOMATIC weapons and not getting chewed up 3) Bruce Wayne needed an exoskeleton leg to walk without a cane, but he's fine after going to Bane Prison... Power of the mind cannot overcome ZERO cartilage 4) All those kids at the end should now be blind 5) Why did they take the bridge and not the tunnel that was cleared?
I rather never understood that plot point. The League wanted to destroy Gotham because it was overrun with crime and corrupt, so they decide to use economics to take it out....but wasn't it pretty much stated in the first film that much of the city's problems was caused by bad economics? Or at least implied with Chill? It seems to me like the League caused the problem it wanted to end.
SPOILERS OBVIOUSLY. Just saw it. It was a great movie, but not without flaws. Yes, I believe this is intentional. It's meant to show the idiocy at the heart of the League of Shadows' mission. Throughout most of the movie, I was extremely confused as to why the League of Shadows had returned to Gotham. They were supposed to destroy corrupt, evil cities but by this point, everyone is stating how there is so little crime and things are going so well. Then, Talia stepping in really tied things together. (I loved that plot twist by the way. Did not see it coming.) Bane wasn't really a smart, philosophical believer, he was just following what Talia was doing while spouting League of Shadows nonsense. Talia had no interest in class warfare and was simply getting revenge for her father/trying to complete his final mission. Supposedly Nolan had the entire trilogy worked out from the get-go, and I truly believe that Nolan originally meant for Joker to be Bane's character in this movie... which would have improved it from 80% to about 8000%. Obviously the personal connection to Talia would have been removed, and Joker would have just been someone who the League of Shadows 'hired' to get things done. The use the bomb to hold Gotham in Limbo, returning it to the people, but 3/4 way through, Joker turns on them and decides to arm the bomb ANYWAY because he just wants to watch the world burn. Oh well, too bad we can't have everything.
This was a satisfying conclusion, but it wasn't without its flaws. The acting, the scale, and the action of this movie were all top notch, but in the end, it became too much to balance. But whenever the movie came close to losing me, it managed to win me back by throwing something great at me. Bane made for an intimidating villain, but it seems like they ran out of things to do with him in the climax. I was able to understand the voice. The movie had its share of plot holes. But despite all that, I still liked it a lot and that ending definitely brought it home. Full review (spoiler free)
Just got back. Loved everypart of the movie except one. They never explained why cat woman fights so well.
It was supposed to be a grid sweep. They group would have broken up in the dozens of miles of tunnels undergroud. They just got caught at the very begining when they were clumped. Lol yes Power of the mind overcame a broken spine. The knee is where you draw the line? Meh There were people taking the tunnel You cant have everyone take the tunnel the congestion would have had too many people caught in the back
I like to think that the Joker crossed the ice river on his own because Gotham wasn't fun without Batman. Remember, at that point Batman was presumed "dead" when Bane started his little revolution, so the Joker probably went "to hell with this," and called a quits.
