Um there are 36 pages in here. I can speculate that's its between pages 18 and 25, that's about it. Look for when people start suggested that the admins use the limited funds to buy a hard drive or some ram for the server. Then someone I think explains that its a leased server.
  2. PhantomVX2000 Breaking the reality

It's not a leased server. The SB.com is on a freakin' shared server, which means we are sharing the server with other websites.
  3. thtadthtshldntb Anti nBSG Troll

yeah, but its also a server leased from a server farm from what has been said over the last year or two on the matter.

    It's a dedicated server:
This was back in 2008 before the switch to XF, but it still states that the server is a dedicated server, however, it's also a leased server:
Which tells us that the server cost is around $200/month, and that includes bandwidth. If that were just bandwidth, Kier wouldn't have said it the way he did.

Thus, we lease the server, but it's dedicated solely to SB(unless this has changed recently).

Stats for the server, are a bit harder to come by.

Also, another line from Kier stating it's a rented/leased server:

Stats wise: Database is nearly 5GB of plain text, bandwidth is a min of 500GB/month(if not more), and I don't know much else about the stats of the site itself. Kier once wrote what a "new server" would need to be able to handle SB:
    So yeah...

    Thanks very much, SuperS4.

I would imagine that redundant SSDs would solve the throughput problem fairly well.

Also, you can tune MySQL to cache more aggressively in RAM for the high performance stuff. So just beefing up the RAM would also lead to a significant performance boost.

However, all hardware suggestions lead back to the limitations of the hosting company...
  7. Isil`Zha The Divider of Heaven

Well, apparently not anymore (emphasis mine.)

Server companies and data warehouses are switching over to SSDs en masse, so its quite possible that the server allotment already has SSDs.

Just going to add my 0.02 EUR here:

If you're willing to accept increased latency to the EU (which doesn't matter for a forum software IMO) you can get a lot better offers than 2 GB RAM from http://www.hetzner.de/en/hosting/produktmatrix/rootserver-produktmatrix-ex

E.g. an Intel Xeon E3-1245 (which comes in 3.3 GHz afaik) and 32 GB RAM for 79 EUR a month. And that includes 10 TB of traffic at 100 mbit/s

I've got a few servers there and can highly recommend them. So can most of Hacker News: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3537513 http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=3898294
  10. Master Basher Just how long do you intend on continuing?

On the Charity idea, you could always consider starting up a Kickstarter Project to "Improve Spacebattles Forums", hopefully through having one of Kier's personal appeal, along with the other Admins?

Other than that, I wouldn't mind giving away some £'s if I can pull it off (a shame we've yet to have a subscription service.)
  11. thtadthtshldntb Anti nBSG Troll

We should try something like a spacebattles tshirt sale or something to raise some cash.
  12. Pyrion Liquid Metal Nanomorph

    Or a battery-backed RAMdrive.
  13. thtadthtshldntb Anti nBSG Troll

yeah clearly we can afford the thousands of dollars per month that a ram drive based server would cost.
  14. Pyrion Liquid Metal Nanomorph

You're obviously thinking of an enterprise solution. I'm not. :p
  15. DanTheVanMan Oh, is that light is a train?

But could we get permission to use:

"Nuke it from orbit, its the only way to be sure!" or "Oppenheimer's Light is our preferred reading illumination!"

Just noticed this. But when you go into Advanced Search, you cannot specify a minimum number of replies when you search for threads. Doing so results in an error.

Was this something that the Admins disabled in his reorganisation of search to keep the server up?
  17. I am not getting certain quote alerts. I have been quoted several times in the Movie Madness sub-forum yet I am getting no alerts.
  18. Plasmafish 屙尿唱山歌

If the quote was added afterward by edit, it doesnt seem to show.
Alternatively, sometimes they appear on the Watched Thread instead of alerts
  19. Apparently, you no longer need to post in the New Member forum before you can post elsewhere. Since I haven't, and I can still post everywhere else. You might want to fix this at some point, if it wasn't deliberately disabled.

New Member forum? We don't have a New Member forum.:p
  21. Robo Jesus Your Mechanical Messiah

    :blinks:

Yeah, on the face of it that seems like an issue waiting to happen right there.

So~, how long until SB gets hit by an Avalanch of Chinese Hackers breaking through the ("Non Existant") New New Members Forum to spread Malware Links?
  23. Avalanche Atypical Netizen

Didn't that already happen? Two or something months ago where there were ~7000 members consistently on or something? Or do you mean a ton of spam posters?

Also, no one has a response (or even the same issue) for the search porblem of mine?
  24. enthalpy Saya~

Can someone explain to me what this error message means? I'm finding it a bit confusing.

EDIT: This only happens on Chrome, and not on Opera. Maybe it's a plugin issue?
  25. Normally, it's supposed to show up if you have no text in the post.
